Diana failed because they refused to promote her. Her album was good. It was just as good as Hillary Duff's album that sold alot at that time. They just
didn't market her twards that bubblegum crowd like they should have. I wonder if there was a reason they did that.
Others were on but not to sing anything new. |

Syesha is the polar opposite of Lil. When Syesha made the top 12 almost everybody in Sucks said she was screechy and didn't belong there at all. By the
time it was down to top 3 she'd more than lived up to her potential and had a slew of great performances, to the point where many Sucksters were hoping
she'd knock off Archie and make the finale (granted, Archie is one of the most hated finalists ever). Lil wasn't nearly as good as Syesha to begin
with, and not only did she never get any better, but she's actually gotten worse.
Simon's complete contempt for Diana DeGarmo, combined with his beloved Mantasia's embarassing career, are enough to ensure that Diana will NEVER be brought back to sing on the show. Melinda's CD is wonderful. I have a copy, and I highly recommend it to anybody who liked her on the show. It is very much old school R&B that sounds a lot like Gladys Knight, c. 1970. |

What I don't understand is why 19E bothered to pick her up and get her signed to RCA or whatever if they had no intentions of promoting her. I liked
Diana's CD when it came out because I was a girl at that age who would enjoy that kind of music, bubblegum pop as meatball mentioned. The least they could
do was give her some promo. Hell they didn't even have to make an effort they could have had her come back to AI. I still cannot fathom why Simon disliked
Diana so much. It almost killed him to praise her when she did DCOL, Enough is Enough and No More *@#@% but he had to.

Diana is still one of the best contestants Idol has ever seen. I can see why it was easy to hate her, but there is no denying her talent.

ROTFLMAO at the DeGarmo defenders. The fact that she lasted after her performance on Elton John night is one of the great injustices in the history of the
show. Yeah, I guess Camille was a little worse that week, but never (not before and not since) have we had a contestant in the top 2 who had a performance
anywhere NEAR as shitty as Diana was with "I'm Still Standing"... That was an unforgivably bad
performance, and I wanted her gone each and every week thereafter (no matter HOW she performed) as punishment for that one performance.

They signed her because 1) they were sort of expected to; 2) the voting in the finale was reportedly fairly close; and mainly because 3) Clay had just sold 2.8
million CDs, and they couldn't be sure Diana wouldn't also. Money makes people do funny things.
Since Diana's voice is great, and she even has the white R&B style he likes, I think what Simon hated about her was her pageanty, vaguely phony-seeming Miss Teen Georgia vibe. Her weight gain as the season went on must have driven him nuts too; he HATES overweight white females. I suspect that if she weighed as much when the top 32 was picked as she had at the finale, she simply would have been passed over no matter how good her voice was. Aside from Mikelah Gordon and Lisa Leuschner, no white female has EVER been picked for the semis if they were more than about 5 pounds overweight. In recent years it hasn't been much of an issue: seeing a hopeless situation, overweight white women who aren't totally delusional know they needn't bother to try out for the show. |
