But did anyone else notice this at the very end ? We see all the characters standing in the doorway of the space ship with their spacesuits and boots on, and then we see Gene Hunt's 1973-white loafer step on the surface of Mars. Now I'm thinking that was supposed to be an ambiguous ending. Some posters at another board mentioned the white loafer, so I wasn't hallucinating :- )

The meteorite storm messing up his timeline was credible, and the white shoe was I think a salute from the writers to the public. Everything had a rational explanation, even if it did feel cobbled together -- 2B and Windy, Vic dying and telling him he looked like an astronaut (where I was all WTF?), and let's face it, the show had the planet Mars in the title. But I too hope BBC America shows the Brit version. That'll be the first time I've tuned into that channel in ages. BTW, did anyone else think the Mars Rover was cute? That sound it made was adorable.

And yes I think the white loafer was just a wink to the audience/final reference to the 70's aspect. I really enjoyed No Nuts getting the promotion and Sam telling his mom what his real name was. Both nice nods.

Maia (sp?) was loved by Sam, he wanted to get back to her so bad and you would expect the writers would want the audience to want Sam to get home to her. OTOH, he finds a "home" in the past and a relationship building with Annie. I wonder if the writers thought there would be a bunch of viewers who would split on where he ends up and with which girl. So instead of having some viewer say wait a minute, I thought Sam wanted to be with Maia so bad and the other viewers saying wait a minute, he seemed to have found a place in the past and with Annie, they played Switzerland and have it be neither. :shrug I was meh on the ending but in a way I'm glad I didn't have to sit there and debate where he ended up and whether the prior episodes led to that conclusion the right way. There were some good moments in the episode and I liked some of the symbolism going on. It wasn't the "epic" ending a lot of people were hoping for but in a way I kind of like it was a nice, neat, wrap up and tied in all the "stuff" (Windy, interesting relationship he had with Gene, "spaceman", the voice on the phone, etc.)

In a way, it was nice to have an uncomplicated explanation, but it felt like it was the easy way out. (Bobby Ewing in the shower, anyone?) Maybe I would have liked it to end with him choosing to stay in 1973. That way I could still hope someone would pick the show up and keep it going. I do not get why they made Gene his father. Who was Vic, then? Did I miss something? And I hated the Obama shit. Stupid. However, if had to end it this way, I did love the white 70's loafer stepping out onto Mars. Nice touch.

That she had to live her life, so I don't think many viewers were clammering for a Jason O'Mara Lisa Bonet reunion

Posts: 24167 (04/03/09 8:51 PM) Gadabout Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Connection Block Invite	I had been watching LoM before the hiatus and gave up on it, but watched the finale after hearing about its, um, uniqueness. - It only takes 4-6 months to get to Mars, not the two years claimed, unless you were foolish enough to start the journey when Earth was on the opposite side of the Sun - No preliminary plans for manned Mars missions involve putting the crew in stasis. Even assuming we have the technology to put people in stasis by 2035, it would likely be far more expensive and inefficient than providing a waking crew with a suitable environment. - You couldn't carry out a real-time conversation with Earth; light takes 10-20 minutes to travel between the two planets - I doubt we'll have come up with artificial gravity by then. The only way to simulate gravity would be to spin the ship, and it didn't look like it was spinning. - So they programmed the computer to make him a cop in 2008. The computer malfunctions, putting him in 1973. Why would it know what 1973 is like? That's like saying you're playing Guitar Hero and the game malfunctions and suddenly you're playing Pong.

Lisa Bonet was listed in the credits each episode as guest star or something. I totally expected her to show up at the end. Maybe that was part of the game. I hope they put this out in DVD so I can go over the whole season again. I really enjoyed it, and look forward to watching for clues. I have not bought a season of a television show since Xena, but I will buy this one. The only thing I was uncomfortable about was the astronaut Annie's wig. Loved her comment to Sam's mom that someday she would be the leader of a group of men. Yep...loved it.

It was a season finale reveal (the 9th). The actual series finale ending was JR appearing to have killed himself after being shown a world without JR by an "angel". Bobby uttered the final words of the series after hearing the gun shot and running into the room "Oh my God..." Of course in subsequent TV movies it was revealed JR did not kill himself but shot at a mirror at the last second. Just saying'

You accept it or you don't and if you don't you have that last little tease. I suggest you watch the classic series the Prisoner if you hated the ending to Life on Mars. As for my opinion, I never really loved this series but I really liked a lot of the scenes from last night. I loved the creepy dancing as Sam as a kid. I love any episode with Windy, she was my favorite character and you can never go wrong with an empty town.

I am pleased with the ending considering this show was based on a timeline of 3 seasons. ABC pulled the plug and they had to do the best they could to tie it up. At lease we had an ending. On our beloved Boston Legal, the writers gave a few jabs at ABC. I think the white loafer on the surface of Mars was a way for the writers to give a big middle finger to ABC. I have a couple of friends in that line of work that might be able to find out, so I will let you know. I also think Annie as a brunette makes her super hot. A few episodes back when she was undercover as a brunette I thought the same thing. I guess I am the only one that thinks that !! Another show bites the dust

For me the ending was OK since I knew it was canceled before it was filmed and they just threw something together for closure BUT what was the whole plot line about Sam's father being a total dirt bag in 1973 but then his real father turns out to be Gene? Everything else made a certain kind of sense, but I just didn't get that. The Obama crap was just stupid and really bad writing, they had already made the point in an earlier ep when Sam saw that Obama had won - the writers did a good job with that, but the "President Obama and her sister" reference was just lame and poorly written. at the Guitar Hero - Pong analogy
