Carrie Underwood was probably the closest thing to that happening. The voters of the contestants booted out the week before is very telling as to how things will go for the following week. If there are two singers that are perceived as too similar, they will end up near the bottom early. However, it will help the one who survives in the long run, because they will take the votes from their main competition. So, while Danny is a frontrunner now, I have faith that once people start getting eliminated, his fantards will stop losing their control of the top, and he will start slipping in the standings until there is a Cumstainedteeth kind of elimination.

Mantasia was an early "front runner" so was Ruben and you could argue that Taylor was too but then everyone that season had a pretty solid chance. Kelly and Cook are the only 'out-of-nowhere' winners (in the case of Cook, before "Hello" no one really cared about him). Jordin just got lucky that Melinda was eliminated. It all depends on how they perform throughout the finals. although Carrie didn't really become a serious front runner until top 11. Nadia and Bo were the ones perceived to go all the way before Carrie was ever perceived as a serious threat. oh and Gokey's equivalent last year was Carly (same amount of pimpage at this point but later on, bitch fell hard).
