Early on during season 1 in the first few episodes Locke was very confident about what was to come. How could this be you ask? How could Locke be so confident in what was to come? Locke back in early season 1 was not the Locke in the original 815 timeline. The Locke in the first 5 episodes was the Locke that we now or eventually will see. When Sawyer asked Locke to confront himself at the hatch Locke said he needed that pain to get himself to where he is today.
Do not discount the fact that perhaps Locke wanted to talk to himself but only at an earlier time. At some point I think somehow Locke will be able to control what parts in time he travels to on the island. This might even be how Harper Santo traveled to meet Juliet back in the season 4 episode "The Other Woman".
I think right after the crash on island Locke grabbed himself with the help of our on island people like miles, juliet, sawyer or after he takes his place alongside Richard as the leader of the others. Locke might then have ordered some of Richard's others to go grab himself right after oceanic 815 crashed. Why did no one else see this? I have no explanation for that at this time or maybe the ones that did see this died right after the crash. Perhaps Locke was not even confronted the second of the crash but perhaps that first night when he went into the jungle to look for some Boar.
Anyways at some point the 2 Locke's will sit down and meet each other. Future Locke will tell Oceanic 815 Locke that the journey he is about to embark on is so wonderful and so fascinating and for his willingness to keep this secret between themselves this is why he is now allowed to walk again. Future Locke then says Oceanic 815 Locke must stay here and talk with an unknown man for a few days because Future Locke has to go out to the beach and help the 815ers on their journey. This is why back in early season 1 he is able to help guide Jack about being a leader. He also has a talk with walt about a lot of things to this day we are never shown. He also looks at Kate with an orange in his mouth in a very unusual manner.
While all this is going on at the beach with Future Locke Oceanic 815 Locke is talking with an unknown man. This person might be Richard or Jacob or someone else but it really does not matter all that matters is this person tells Locke his instructions for the future on the island. The person gives him the instructions for what he must do but the person does not tell him things like Boone's death or Eko's death because if they do this there will be a course correction like with what happened to Charlie Pace. Whatever happenes in time will happen just in a different manner. Shannon might have died by a monster in one timeline and perhaps she was going to but since Locke altered Boone's future it saved Shannon for a while. After Future Locke talks to everyone on the beach that he needs to talk with he then tells Kate he is going to go look for some Boar. Once this happens the 2 Lockes switch back and this is when Locke sees his future self disappear. This is the bright light he talks about when he says I saw the eye of the island and it was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.
Well for those that read all this thanks and I think this is why Locke says things like This is not what was suppose to happen. This is also why he is in shock when Boone dies. This is why he says Boone was a sacrifice that the island demanded. He does not know that Boone was always going to die one way or another.
