A couple of years ago, I went to Williamsport, PA in December. I'd have had to change planes twice and the flight into Williamsport was on a turboprop. I chose to fly nonstop to Baltimore, rent a car, and drive up. If ice were to kill me, at least I'd have been on the ground first. I also note that the plane that crashed had a wing configuration that looked similar to that of the ATR-72 or whatever turboprop it was that crashed belly-up south of Chicago on Halloween in 1994 due to icing. she was the co-pilot.

I know a guy whose in-laws live in Clarence, and they apparently were pretty close to where it happened. That had to have been scary as hell. I started out on CNN last night, then switched to the Buffalo stations because they were doing much better. Now I'm tired as fuck because I watched all night.

Steve Chealander of the National Transportation Safety Board says Colgan Air recommends pilots fly manually in icy conditions. Pilots are required to do so in severe ice. Pilots of the doomed plane discussed "significant" ice buildup on their wings and windshield just before crashing Thursday night. Colgan Air operates a fleet of 51 regional turboprops including Continental Connection, United Express and US Airways Express.
