I can't believe I went so long without seeing this movie. And then I pretty much just watched it on a whim. Very good call on my part, I must say. I had heard good things, but I just wish people had tried harder to convince me to actually watch it. This film follows three separate story lines that take place in Basin City, a corrupt and vile town. I won't reveal too much, but basically, there's a lot of murder and mayhem and good vs bad and it's all very violent and exciting. Awesome. Just an awesome movie. No, I won't give it a 10 and move it into legendary status. But this was really an amazing flick. I had no idea if I would like it or not going in, and it ended up being a really fun, entertaining movie throughout. The style is very interesting, but you get used to it immediately, and it really makes for a beautiful piece of visual work. I don't read graphic novels, but you can feel the comic influences in it, and it helps add to the level of fun. It's got a wonderful balance of humor and action. I found myself laughing out loud several times, and when I wasn't, I was being impressed by how badass it was. Don't go in expecting a serious movie. Expect something that's a ton of fun with great entertainment value that you'll be able to appreciate watching the whole way through. |

Religulous

I had been meaning to see this ever since it came out, but I just never got around to it until earlier this month. I found myself bored one Sunday night at, like, 2, and I didn't feel like going to sleep, so I asked Mr. Internet if I could watch this film, and he was happy to oblige. In this documentary, religious skeptic Bill Maher travels around interviewing various religious (and a couple not-so-religious) figures on their faith. Generally, he makes them look like idiots, leading to either outrage or confusion on their part, and humor on ours. As he visits various locations and presents various challenge to three predominant religious faiths (Christianity, Judaism, and Islam), he makes an argument for the logic of atheism and the absurdity of religion. No, this wasn't as good as I had hoped it would be. I don't know why, but I was really thinking this would be great, and it wasn't that at all. But it's a decent movie for sure, one of the better ones I've seen this year. It's funny. Not uproariously funny, but funny. And yes, it seems he interviews some of the most inarticulate, idiotic proponents of religious faith, but I'm okay with that, because it makes it all that much more amusing (and the skepticism of the most theologically educated person in the film, a Vatican priest, is ironically entertaining). Many of the biggest absurdities of religion are brought up, and while it's not really a hugely compelling case for atheism (or even agnosticism), it certainly makes legitimate points. I think it got a bit too preachy at the end, leaning into the realm of serious when it's just not a powerful enough movie to have any sort of dramatic effect. But for most of the film, you're able to laugh at how silly some people really are, and I'm all for those rascally interviewers who shock the interviewee and leave them flabbergasted (Ali G, anyone?). Solid film. I just wish it had been a little better. |

Totally Baked: A Pot-U-Mentary
![]() ![]()
I had a legitimate reason for seeing this, I promise. It was free on Netflix, and a certain illegal substance was supposed to accompany the film. But said substance ended up having to be delayed, so I saw almost the entirety of this movie in a normal state of mind. Which means I can rate it accurately. It also means it was ruined for me. This is another documentary, although probably one far less well-known than the last one. Also, it's much less "documentary." It has another solid message behind it, though. Basically, you've got a straight-edge divorced father who's having a Reunion for his high school debate team. Before they arrive, however, two drug traffickers on the run from the cops make a last-ditch effort to hide out in his home, and when the guests show up, they are each held hostage by the gun-wielding couple. As we go through various skits, facts, and weed-related comedians, the story of the old debate team hostage situation slowly moves forward. Eventually our main character's daughter arrives (or, rather, is dropped off by her mother after she is caught with some drug paraphernalia in her purse), and one-by-one, the two pot fiends introduce our goody-two-shoes characters to the world of cannabis. Eventually they all end up realizing the joys of smoking the green, and they have a jolly good time getting high and chilling in the the backyard. Oh, and there's a narrator who's in every other scene, but he annoyed the shit out of me, so I didn't mention him. Did I mention how Religulous disappointed me a bit? Well, this one disappointed me way more. I mean, I wasn't expecting anything great, I guess, but dammit, I was hoping for a decent film on legalizing marijuana. And this was far from decent. It wasn't very funny, many of the characters were entirely annoying, and half of the scenes were lame as hell. Honestly, when it comes down to it, there's no real value in this movie whatsoever. It got three stars from me purely because it had hot chicks (who got naked) and because it was arguing for a lift on the prohibition of marijuana. That's it. For those two things, it deserves some recognition, but from a film perspective, it was dreadful. I dunno, maybe it's only meant to be viewed when you're high, or maybe it's only meant to be appreciated by people who didn't already know all of the facts that were presented. But neither was the case for me, unfortunately (my mistake on both counts). But hey, if you really don't know why the War on Drugs is detrimental to society and why cannabis in particular needs its illegality lifted quite desperately, this is a nice, light-hearted intro to the topic. |

It's a Larry Clark film. He's made some pretty great movies like "Kids" and "Bully". KP is dirty but truthful to life and I
thought it was well done.
It was never released in the US, but here's a torrent. http://www.torrentreactor.../torrents/686505/Ken-Park |

Bill Mahr, I like the guy sometimes, he's funny, and I agree with him politically But religiously he's no better than the extremists IMO. He's just the atheist version of an evangelist extremist Christan and that puts him on the same level as them to me. |

Maybe it was meant to be ironic, but it just came off as hypocritically self-righteous. His message may be more accurate, but the way he went about presenting it was quite similar to the methods employed by the very people he was bashing. Some scenes in Half Baked were filmed at a store I worked at (sorta.....I worked in the central office for the chain).Sorry. Too bad it wasn't a better film. Although I don't remember any scenes that took place in a store. |

I know I'm probably gonna take flak for this one, but in my defense, I was kinda distracted while watching this and the room was pretty noisy so at times it was tough to hear what was being said. And a few of them just had accents that were a bit too strong for my taste. Okay, so we've got a mobster named Lenny (played by Tom Wilkinson), and One Two (Gerard Butler) owes him money. Then we've got Uri (Karel Roden), and he owes Lenny money as well. So while Uri is trying to procure that money from his accountant (Thandie Newton), he lets Lenny hold onto his lucky painting. Meanwhile, his accountant hires One Two and co. to steal the money that Uri owes Lenny. When Lenny's stepson steals the painting, things begin to get very complicated and much madness results. My main problem with this movie is that it was just too hard to follow. It's very rare that I have such a complaint, but this one took me about half of the movie just to figure out what was going on. And yeah, it's probably 100% because I couldn't understand what was being said. Which I can't really fault the film for, but it affected my enjoyment nonetheless. There were a couple of amusing moments, but nothing laugh-out-loud-worthy, and I just didn't find it to be particularly clever or exciting. The chase scene annoyed the hell out of me with the way it was shot, and I can't think of a single character that I enjoyed. I mean, it wasn't total shit; I didn't really consider myself bored out of my mind while watching it or anything. But it was certainly not any good either, and I'm surprised it has a decent rating on IMDB. Just not a good movie, in my opinion. Nothing worth spending the time watching it for. |

American History X

This is supposed to be an amazing movie, one of the best of modern filmmaking. So when my friends said they were gonna watch it, despite being tired as hell, I was excited to be able to finally see it. Maybe that was part of the problem. The film tells the tale of Derek Vinyard (Edward Norton) and his younger brother, Danny. When the former, a buff neo-Nazi sporting swastikas and an undying hate for minorities, is arrested for murdering a black man who was trying to steal his car, Danny witnesses the event, sees his older brother sent off to prison for a 3-year sentence, and becomes a member of the intolerant system of beliefs himself. But when Derek returns from prison, he is a changed man, one who aims to show his little brother just what is so wrong about the hate he used to preach so vehemently. As the movie progresses, we learn via flashbacks the history of Derek's philosophies and the ways his brother was influenced by them, as well as what caused Derek's transformation during his time in jail. I'm hoping I didn't spoil too much there. I don't think I did. Anyway, this is a movie that begins gritty and intense, drawing you in with the hard realism of intolerant beliefs and hateful bigotry. It does a damn good job of compelling you to watch and convincing you to really soak in what you're witnessing. But halfway through, the movie takes an abrupt shift, becoming something that could amost be labeled "cute." And sorry, but the ending just isn't enough to take it back out of that territory. I've got no problems with sweet movies (coming up shortly is a movie I saw the other night which I liked in part due to its cuteness). But hardcore displays of neo-Nazi prejudice that turn into heartfelt performances of love is a bit too much. That being said, that's not what hurt this movie, not really. I suppose there was no really amazing way to handle this plot without ending up with a stark contrast between its beginnings and its endings. I can get over that shift and appreciate both halfs for what they are. What really got to me was the fact that everyone was so damn wishy-washy in their beliefs. These people are willing to kill, to risk their lives and futures, to ruin the oganization of society for what they believe in. Yet it almost seems as if they abandon these philosophies at the drop of a hat. I can't say a whole lot without spoiling things, and I'll admit that analysis is probably a bit unfair, but really, I just don't think there was any dramatic enough reason for hate to turn into tolerance. I dunno, I especially would have preferred Danny getting something more than a life-changing story to alter his perspective, but maybe I just didn't completely catch the brotherly bond there. This is not a bad movie. I can see how some would consider it a good one. And I did enjoy it. But I can't really put it up there with the greats, or even the pretty goods. It was just lacking something for me that would have made such a serious and dramatic subject matter a little more believable. |
