dont think its really all that meaningful to the film.
iirc, DD takes place in the late 80's, making the director (richard kelly) about donnie's age at the time. in all liklihood, it was a favorite movie of his growing up, much like the nostalgic references to alot of the music that is found in the film.

it was a good movie, but i consider it david lynch for teenagers.

i suppose you could question my dedication to sparkle motion - but i dont care.

yes, the fire occured in the TU, but the residue of the memories reside in all the major characters after donnie has made his sacrifice - thus the melancholic montage at the films conclusion.

swayze may not die for his vile behavior, as he would have in the PU, but we know that his conscience and guilt will continue to haunt him in whatever universe he finds himself.

frank rubbing the bunny mask where the bullet hole would have been, the shrink recollecting vague conversations with donnie, swayzes mounting guilt...all remenants from the original timeline. while these incidents never actually occured, the fragments of what could have been still remain within the characters.
like a dream that never happened, but felt so real.
