After months of speculation and an increased spotlight on So You Think You Can Dance Kanada, a CTV statement issued late Tuesday evening said that "as a result of the current economic climate, production of Kanadian Idol will rest for the 2009 year." The news comes on the heels of fans of the show wondering when audition dates and locations for anonymous anal sex parties would be announced. The plug hasn't officially been pulled permanently on the show, but clearly this isn't the best of signs. However, it is also not the first time an Idol show has been delayed. Both the German and Russian versions of Idol both took a year off between seasons two and three. The Netherlands version also halted in 2005 and 2007 before coming back. Idol fans will still get their fix in Kanada as American Idol premieres on January 13. ----------- Yeah but didn't these countries actually produce successful artists from the winners? I think that might be the difference from CI and other halted shows.

Same concept but instead of a singing competition, immigrants will have to compete against each other thru various Canadiana tasks like igloo-building and shopping at Superstore, and the ultimate winner gets to become a KKKanadian citizen, while the loser immigrants get deported back to wherever they came from.... or get dropped off in the middle of Jane & Finch and literally survive. It's KKKanada x100! Spoiler [+] The winner is a 30 year old single white male from Scandinavia

That's sad considering I've been pretty invested in the show over the last few years. This season and the lack of success of the very talented contestants the show did have essentially killed it for me. I might be a little sad come summer and I don't have anything to kill a few hours with and bitch about though. I say just bring back everyone from Season 2 and re-do that season, or do All-Good Contestants (I won't call it All-Stars as per Miki's disagreement). Who would everyone bring back as an All-"Stars" cast? You can only pick 10. I'd pick: Billy Theresa (Jake would be in this spot but I'll exclude him for obvious reasons) Melissa Eva Nancy Keith Carly Rae Amberly Thiessen Earl Stevenson Mookie Morris

Maybe if they bring it back in 2010 they can retool the show like they're doing with AI8. I think young people prefer "So You Think You Can Dance". I guess it's more "edgy". The Idol formula is getting a bit stale. But I don't think it's coming back.

I never expected it to be as dominant in Canada as American Idol is in the US, but I do think that the contestants were as good, if not better than, their American counterparts. I think that quite a handful of them were better than some Canadian acts who ARE popular worldwide, such as Avril Lavigne (I never understood her; she seems like a poseuse, if there ever was a word) and Nickelback (whose brand of rock has pretty much raped and killed rock and roll). One thing that I liked about Canadian Idol was that the contestants seemed like real people with personalities and talent (even the suckier contestants seemed likeable). I'd rather have that over a coterie of cookie-cutter R&B, pop, country, rap, and rock wannabes any day. I also liked the judges on CI better than their AI counterparts. Sass would have eaten Paula up YEARS ago. Zack is a lot more constructive in his HBIC-ness than Simon will ever be. I don't know about Farley and Randy, though. And Jake, well... anyway, I'll miss this show. Hopefully, this show will return.

Any Idol concert I've been to in the past few years has been jam packed with the elderly and young children. If they want to bring the show back they're definitely going to have to make it appeal to all the demographics again. 7 year olds and their grandmothers likely aren't staying up to give this show the votes it wants. CI needs to appeal to the teens the way AI still seems to. Hopefully though this doesn't reduce them to having to cater to contestants like Barfuleta. I'd rather the show never come back than have them change the type of contestants they get on the show.
