12. Perdita (101 Dalmations)
Although she was the mother of fifteen puppies, Perdita (nicknamed Perdy) was, IMO, never as strong or as interesting a character as Pongo. For the most part, she's just kind of there. It seemed like she relied on Pongo to make all the big decisons regarding finding the puppies and unlike her brave husband, she was actually afraid of Cruella DeVille. She does get credit because, like Pongo, she is strongly devoted to her puppies and seems to be a good mother overall. But, like I said earlier in Pongo's write-up, 101 Dalmations just had too many characters overall and many of them, including Perdita ended up getting shafted as most of the attention was given to Pongo and Cruella (and Roger to some extent). Anyway, kind of off topic, but this picture of Perdy is pretty dumb looking. That said, it was hard to find any pictures of her at all where she wasn't with Pongo.



11. Prince Erik (The Little Mermaid)
Erik was sort of a tricky one to place. As far as Disney guys go, he's pretty hot (not as hot as Hercules, but still) and overall, he's a pretty nice guy. That said, he's also more of a plot device than an actual character, IMO. It bugs me that Ariel, who had been so interested in the human world for so long, only decided to be human after a very, very brief meeting with Erik in which she saved his life. He was the reason she gave up her voice, her fins, and her entire family to take on a new world. Personally, I'd have to wonder if the guy was really worth it. I mean, he's nice, sure, but he's also fairly bland. Yeah, he does have his good qualities like being able to play the flute and caring about his dog, Max (it was pretty brave of him to go back to the burning ship to rescue the dog), but still, it's a quite a big sacrifice. Anyway, Erik is kind of like Cinderella's Prince Charming in that he is looking for someone special and hasn't found the right girl yet, but finds his soulmate in Ariel. I think a better use of the Erik character would be if Ariel met him after deciding to take on life in the human world (simply because she finds humans so interesting) and they fell in love from there. Alas, that just isn't how the original fairy tale went.



10. John Smith (Pocahontas)
John Smith is a lot like Prince Erik in that he's hot, but also fairly boring. I mean, even his name is bland, bland, bland (that said, at least he has one.) Also notable is that I couldn't find a single picture of him on Google that Pocahontas isn't in with him. That's lets you know something, I'm sure. John Smith comes to the New World with Ratcliffe and the Company hoping to strike it rich. However, once he meets Pocahontas, who teaches him about the colors of the wind, etc...he begins to doubt Ratcliffe's mission as he begins to fall in love with the Indian Princess. I really cannot think of much else to say about him. He squeezes into the top ten because he's hot and because I liked his British accent and also because, everyone below him is less likable or more boring than he is.

9. Thomas O'Malley (The Aristocats)
First off, anyone else find it weird that a cat has a last name? Last names are rare enough as it is in Disney movies, and I find it hilarious that this aparently Irish tom cat has one (who, by the way has an American accent and not a French OR Irish one.) Thomas O'Malley is a suave, cool, confidant and charming street cat who knows where its at (Sorry, couldn't resist! That was a great song!) He helps Duchess and her kittens return safely to their home and their mistress while falling in love with the pampered rich mother kitty along the way. Tom is very flirtatious and quite a lady's man, but he seems to be quite smitten with Duchess and his feelings for her seem to be real. He's a lot like Tramp in that he's a stray who knows how cool he is, but when it comes time to settle down, he choses to be with the rich girl. Even though he just met Duchess and the kittens, Tom has some paternal instints and risks his life to save the girl kitten (er...Marie?) when she falls off the train tracks. Tom also manages to outwit the villain Edgar with the help of his buddies and saves the day. Oh, and did I mention he's also a musician? That in and of itself is cool!


8. Tramp (Lady and the Tramp)
Tramp is basically the canine version of Thomas O'Malley, who ranks higher because, as I said before, I'm more of a dog person. I complained in Lady's write-up that I couldn't find any good pictures of her where Tramp is not present. I guess I take it back: there was no prejudice against Lady and her status as main character because this is the only picture of Tramp I could find without Lady in it. I guess its some giant statue of him at Disneyworld/Disney Land or something. Anyway, on to Tramp's discription. He's a charming, fast-talking, snarky stray dog who loves adventure. He loves freedom and hates to be tied down and as such, he can't understand why Lady is so attached to her owners and her pampered life style. Tramp often makes fun of humans, saying that as soon as they find something else to occupy their attention (in Jim Dear and Darling's case, a new baby), they will throw the dog out. This leads me to believe he may have had an owner at one point who didn't pay enough attention to him. According to the pound dogs, Tramp is quite the lady's man (and no, I don't mean Lady's man) who gets around with all breeds of dogs, but like Thomas O'Malley, his heart is stolen by the pampered rich girl in the end and he decides to settle down. Anyway, not sure what breed Tramp is (well, I suppose a mutt), but he's one adorable dog. <3



7. Jane (Tarzan)
While Tarzan and Clayton are fairly generic characters and not very interesting as a whole, Jane was a pretty fun and entertaining character as well as a pretty strong woman. She's my favorite character in Tarzan, although Kala (Tarzan's mother) and Terk are pretty cool too. In the year 1860-something she gives up her life in Britain to travel pretty much alone through the jungles of Africa with only her dopey elderly father and Clayton for company in search of the elusive Mountain Gorilla. Of the three travelers, Jane is probably the most passionate and excited about finding these animals and discovering their way of life. Not only does she end up finding the gorillas, she also finds Tarzan, the human who lives among them. Jane puts a lot of passion and energy into teaching Tarzan about the human world while falling in love with him. Tarzan is even willing to give up his life in the jungle and join Jane in Britain. In the end, however, Jane is so drawn to the beauty of the African jungle and to Tarzan, that she decides to stay (and her father goes along with her.) Jane, like pretty much everyone else in the movie, gets blindsighted by Clayton, but I can't begrudge her too much for that I guess. Anyway, great character overall. She's also a pretty good artist if I remember correctly.
