Arkansas voters have approved a measure banning unmarried couples who are living together being adoptive or foster parents. The vote imposes a ban that the
Legislature balked at authorizing. More than 56 percent of voters supported the ban, said by its proponents to be aimed primarily at keeping gays from becoming
foster or adoptive parents. The measure's sponsor, the Arkansas Family Council, tried to paint its as a battle against a "gay agenda". I WANT TO
ADOPT A BABY.

Go adopt a baby as a single parent -- you are still allowed to do that. Then, have your partner move in the next day. Apparently, thinking things through is
not a hallmark of The Arkansas Family Council.

I heard that there are some towns in Arkansas that sacrifice a child every harvest time to ensure a healthy crop the next year. |

This makes me sad. If it's a good home, it's a good home. I'd rather be adopted by a loving gay couple than go from foster home to foster home.

I am from Arkansas and I voted against the ban. I am from one of the few areas of Arkansas that is not Republican and conservative. (Obama actually won my
county by over 60%.) The Act also bans unmarried hetero couples from adopting too. Pathetic! Anyone who wants to provide a home to unwanted children should
be able to.

I foresee the distinct possibility of the result of this Arkansas vote being heard in the Supreme Court... if it doesn't get overturned in the Arkansas
courts beforehand, that is. So, I take it that an unmarried person who's living on their own can adopt there? Yet,
if you're unmarried but happen to be part of a couple, gay OR straight, you can't?
I don't see this measure surviving the court battles which are assuredly in its future. |
