The message says to open after they are finished eating. It doesn't say "open if you want to". So they have no choice in whether to open it or not. Their choice is in WHEN they open it. Will the lure of the unknown and their overwhelming curiosity cause them to cut short their feast in order to open the box? Will they resist until they are stuffed and cannot eat another bite? What if ONE of the survivors decides to take it upon himself to open it before the rest have finished eating? They'll be forced to put the food down right then and there.

I don't think this is the sacrifice the teasers are referring to, but it could feasibly fit. The survivors sacrifice stuffing their faces with food, for what's behind box #1. Only to find out it's a switchup. The only part that doesn't fit is where it mentions some survivors regret it later. Whether they ate, or didn't eat, makes no impact on whether they merged or not if the buffs inside the box are switchup buffs. THe switchup was going to happen regardless. Also how would being switched up, cause people to regret not eating? switchup, merge, same diff really in regards to the need for food.

Unless, of course, there are actually 2 boxes. one box they open now, no feast. inside are merge buffs. the other box, they open after they feast, inside are switchup buffs. That would cause several survivors to regret their decision. Of course, that then erases the "shocking sacrifice" because given the choices, choosing the feast box really is a no-brainer.
