I think it was revealed that these people are not as fabulous and wealthy as they pretend. It's odd that Don, who is usually so skeptical of people, was going along with things. I bet Don's drink was spiked and I'm glad he got out of that loony bin.

What do you suppose that phony doctor could have been giving Don for heat exhaustion? ha! good question. when the real doctor at the beginning of the season was prescribing phenobarbital to help with his high blood pressure, i guess all bets are off. and the whole don thing tonight. ever find yourself at a party or in a situation that should have been completely cool but in you gut felt really fucked up and wrong? one you wanted to run away from but couldn't because you committed to it in the first place? so you are in for the ride... that whole don story was squeamishly perfect tonight. i've been there. i love it when weiner does that... When Don made that phone call... "This is Dick Whitman." Just like that... I guess I was hoping he would be out of there... Also, seeing the guy with the two kids, the boy who looked just like Dick at that age, with the same haircut, I thought it would make him want to go back home. Maybe not yet?

I'm not among Don's biggest fans (sorry, Glam!), but I felt bad for him at that moment, because he'd possibly blown the remnants of his cool. That's just something you don't say if you want to fit in with '60s Eurotrash. (That is, if you really want to.) I thought the ep was about provenance. Where someone comes from. Who one's people are (continuing from last week). That one's name is what matters. Consider the following exchanges: European Guy to Don: "I'm Vicomte Monteforte d'Alsace. William." Don: "Don." EG (to Joy): "This is Don." .... Joy: "I'm Joy." EG to Don: "Oh, and this is Rocky." (Clearly, his--at least--second wife. Younger, taller, better looking than he.) .... Don: "Pete, this is Joy, and Rocky, and Vicomte Monteforte." European Guy: "Very good." European Guy adds, to Pete, because it's important to European Guy: "D'Alsace. William." (He shakes Pete's hand.) Pete: "That's quite a name. (I'm) Peter Dyckman Campbell." (I submit we have never heard 'Pete Campbell' introduce himself using his high-born and wealthy mother's maiden name as his middle name, because it's never before been important to him to make an impression on someone who's popped up in an episode.) Pete (continues): "Have we met somewhere--Newport?" European Guy (in the ultimate diss): "I've a terrible memory for faces. Nice meeting you." It's the ultimate diss for Pete because European Guy implies that Pete's face, and not Pete's name, is all that's relevant.

And then in the previews they show him on route to somewhere... so I do think he's out of there, away from Joy and her empty, creepy gang.

Glad that Peggy finally got a haircut, but I still cannot stand the bangs. I'm not sure I'm enjoying Don's trip to LA at the moment, but it just reeks of a strange escape from everything he is used to. When Don commented that the group must be well off and they all looked uncomfortable, something tells me that it must be the complete opposite, but just how they're managing to survive in such luxury is beyond me. I loved how the foreigners in this episode are providing all the kicks into the monotonous lifestyle for everyone. You have the openly gay "European" who is open and unrepentant of his sexuality, but he also goes out and changes Peggy's hairstyle as well. Then you have the mix of foreigners in Don's LA trips. rofl @ Sal looking at playboy! You know he was definitely reading the articles. Poor Sal, he totally got rejected by Ken, who was the most open about his homophobia.

Yet another wonderfully subtle comment on workplace sexism. Joy described herself and her friends/father as "nomads." It wasn't clear whether they actually have money or whether they have a lot of friends who have money who allow them to mooch. I supposed Don was fascinated because he, too, feels he has no roots. At the end of the episode, has his interaction with them lead to his reaching out to some yet unknown root?

I was distracted during the entire Euro trash story. Willie took me out of it completely. I don't know if any of you saw it, but he played the Euro-trash swinger in Super Troopers and all I could hear, whenever he was on screen was the techno song from the movie. And even though she said she was 21, did anyone get a "She's really 16 vibe"? I mean she looked YOUNG. Poor Sal. Who the fuck did Don call? Roger has gotten himself into a situation that he is going to regret next season. Both personally & professionally. What is happening now with Jane is what would have happened with Joan last year if she had said yes. In 6 months she's going to be banging someone like Don and Roger will be on his 3rd heart attack.

Perhaps he told her of his past, and by using his real name, he's signaling to her he wants to be his true self now in their relationship? Eh, I'm probably all wrong on that, but it was my first thought. Also, in a strange way, I thought Joy was very much like a Betty clone of another era. Cold, yet sexual.

He used his full name on the phone, if he had told Betty, he would have called and simply said "Hi, it's Dick", not using his full name. But that doesn't matter, since we know he never confided in Betty, so he wasn't calling her. The only other person who may know he's not Don Draper is that woman from the car dealership. They introduced us to her and then never showed us the outcome. There must be more to her story, Weiner wouldn't just have a woman show up like that for no reason.
