Maybe someone can explain this for me: Why do guys lie, even though they know it will fuck up their good thing, when all they would have to do is say,
"Yeah, I did it, but it didn't mean anything. I'm sorry, and that part of my life is over." Or just don't lie to begin with.

I cannot remember the last scripted show I was obsessed with as much as this one. I especially lovelove the portrayal of workplace sexism that seemed so
natural at the time. Of course Harry didn't even think of offering Joan the job. She's getting married and won't last long in the office, you
know. Besides, Harry gets no credibility points for heading a department that is him and a secretary. It's a good paying job--for a man.
And there's Joan, who hasn't had her consciousness raised yet. She's disappointed, for a moment, but then probably tells herself she was wrong to expect anything different. Doctor-fiance wants her to assume her natural role as trophy and caretaker. Will this change anything about her interactions with Peggy? As likely as anything, someone in Joan's position would grow a deep(er) resentment of the woman who thinks she's not like the others (already seen in Peggy's sister). Last season, there were great scenes on this theme, like the suits watching the "girls" trying on lipsticks and Roger's horndoggedness, but this season, it's getting so much more nuanced. Maybe it's my own personal experience, but I'm liking this much more than the disaffected Betty storyline. Betty is the ice princess who has always gone for the life she thinks she deserves but now is unhappy that it isn't perfect. Joan is the confident and competent woman who will run up against a system designed to keep her in her place, plus she's getting older. Peggy is young enough to still be fearless. I'm just curious to see where those two are going to go. |

Salome.. this is what to me is the crux of the show... old guard against new guard... and for years Don was new guard against the Roger old guard and now he is
them.. a cheater, philander a liar... look at that dinner party.. the one woman smashed out of her gills obviously married to Crab who wouldn't be..
Roger's wife ... well that woman has to know.. of course now Betty she is one of them.. drunk, manipulated and alone... JOIN THE CLUB BETTY....
Meanwhile the women in the office are tasting independence, growing, and hitting that glass ceiling without the 18 million cracks... Joan finally gets ambition outside of the "girls" and wow she hit it home with the look on her face.. and the tool time who was "replacing" her. She was actually RESPECTED by the clients as well as ADMIRED and for Joan that was significant... Dug the rocker priest.. okay chisty rock but he is also a sign of the new Catholic Church.. when did Vatican II happen 1968.. the times they are changing.. for some its good for some its a shock but its coming and coming fast... and for people who liked their world compartmentalized and safe this was not the time. |

While I appreciate Harry's decision as likely for the time, I wondered about the future impact. It seemed like Joan's charm and insight was a big part
of the success with clients. Will clients listen to some little junior dweeb? I suppose that could be the end of the whole story, but I hope not.

Betty doesn't even realize she belongs to a club of women like Mona and Crab's wife. Maybe that will happen when she and Don literally join the
(country) club.

my fear for betty is that she is taking a bold but fruitless course for a woman in 1962.
(now i totally want and expect all women here to straighten me out. even you, glam. gloves off.) but has betty really thought this through? (a theme from season one.) if this is just a negotiation point of having don sleep in the office for a night or two. ok. i get that. sleep on that couch, don. do it. but if this is truly betty wanting to sever their relationship, end their marriage, what would be the point? a simple innuendo by jimmy? (for which she can find no proof?) her fears that she was expected to buy the heineken and her ill perceived notion of being publicly embarrassed? really? is it all that stupid? how could this be? betty clearly has no evidence of a don's infidelity (forget what you know) and only fears about that. she resents the thought that their whole life is just an experiment for don to do his job. ok, i get that. what is betty's problem? a problem so great that she would be willing to bust her marriage all up (after her fear/resentment/wonderment of that season one divorcee) just to make her betty point about nothing but what she fears? wtf is betty hoping to achieve here? it escapses me... bring it on, mad men chicks. school me... |

I wouldn't dream of it, sofa dear, but:
Her references to "humiliation" tonight didn't just refer to the Heineken incident---they were veiled references to Don's treatment of her over the years, and Don didn't get it till she called him at the office. (Oh, how I loved that she stayed in that----undoubtedly increasingly stinky---party dress for 24 hours, then changed into something clean, then checked on the dinner in the oven, then called Don, then just shut off the oven without removing the casserole.)

Given how Betty reacted to the divorcee neighbor last year and her single friend this year, I'd be surprised if she goes for divorce.

I think that Betty is just starting to feel trapped and penned in by the complications of the life that she chose. Her frustration was evident when she rode
the horse so harshly. She doesn't have a life of her own, she feels used , she has no freedom. The two women at dinner were further proof of her
inevitable future. I don't think she's thinking clearly about anything--divorce is the least of her plans. She wants to be free of all of it,
including the two brats.

She needs to feel she can control something, the horse, the chair, even the casserole, but mostly Don. She wants a confession and an apology. Plus, she's a bird-shooting passive-aggressive wacko. |

My guess is that Harry will be replaced the moment the firm realizes how important that arm of the company is -- television is still growing in popularity at
this time. I see him being ousted and being angry.
The Joan thing has been discussed, but even more devestating was the end scene where she is rubbing the marks out of her shoulder from her very tight (by necessity, given the load it bears) bra. Literally, a painful mark from the most obvious part of being a woman -- her breasts, and the weight of carrying them. A little bit over the top, but I felt like with her character specifically, it worked. |

This was pointed out somewhere else, is joan gaining weight? She seems more curvy, and I am not sure if this has to do with her character.
