I wonder how long it will take for Bush to be on TV congratulating FEMA for being so well-prepared.

I just hope they get those kids and people stranded on High Island some water.
(I think Bush learned his lesson about giving out kudos.) |

I live in East Houston and as I type this, I realize I have alot to be thankful for. Me and my kids are alive. Just got back home and no damage to our house.
Here a couple of hours and the lights are back on. It is difficult to find supplies. Not all lights are on in my area and so not many stores with supplies.
There is a lot of damage from trees and roofs blowing off. Some have not been so lucky. I'm glad to see other members of Sucks that live in the area are ok
and I continue to pray for all the people affected from that son of bitch Ike.

The FIRST thing we tell them is that as individuals and as Municipalities, they can expect to be on their own for the first 72 hours, as Garbo says. Fema actually has very few full time employees and depends on local volunteers, first responders, and the national guard. Fema is a very fucked up organization and as a concept, it just has not worked. The next thing we teach them is that if evacuation is ordered, get the fuck out. I dread Hurricane season every year. It sucks that we have to go through this learning curve everytime shit happens. The evacuation was alot smoother, but the response is going to be hell. |

Glad you are OK Christy, and everyone else who has checked in. Hopefully we will hear from SK and Die soon.
KHOU is really doing a good job, balancing between news and community assistance with information. I love the fact that they are describing things for the radio listeners. When you are in the middle of stuff like this, you often only have radio, so that is really thoughtful of them. During the earthquake I got my first phone call out about 4 days later, and my sister in a distant state knew a hell of a lot more than I did, and was able to tell me more about what was going on in the area. |

wmdaggie wrote:To Simply and Die and all others who are going through this hell. I completely know what you are going through. Hang in there. I live in Vero Beach, FL which took a direct double hit back in 2004 with Hurricanes Frances and Jean. We boarded up our windows, stayed home during both hurricanes and made it. It was one of the most horrifing experiences of our lives but it taught us a lot about hurricane preparations and post hurricane clean up. Some folks over here left there homes and regret it because they were unable to go back home for days due to heavy flooding and down power lines in many sections. Looting was also a problem for some. As long as you are boarded up, not live off the shore line or in a mandatory evacuation zone, have plenty of supplies then you have a great chance of surviving, IF it's a Category 2 or under. Anything over a Cat 2 is likely to be catastrophic and everyone should evacuate when told. I will never forget the sound of my neighbor's tree landing on my roof for Frances, the sound of my tree landing on my roof for Jean, the sound of the winds(sounds like when a dragon is blowing flames out of it's mouth - well, like in the movie Reign of Fire), and the sounds of the outer walls that my house made for hours and hours. And those 2 hurricanes were only a Category 1. If you read this, that means you're powered up, hopefully physically unharmed and we in Sucks are very very relieved. Good luck on your insurance and clean up efforts. I hope it goes smoothly and quick. |

Thank you MercRise for the check list. I was just coming in to ask for an update of our Hurricane posters.
Die & SimpKim, my thoughts and prayers :hugs |

Still nothing from Die? Yikes. Thinking of all posters still MIA and/or affected by the storm.
Talked to my buddy from Galveston tonight; he is "cautiously optimistic" that his house is still standing. They evacuated to Houston and don't have power but do have running water, cell capability, and gas to cook with. He's hoping to be able to get home sometime this week. |

Diva, it's pretty unlikely anyone will be allowed back to Galveston in September. The latest estimate is 1 week before they can even get power to the
hospital. The mayor today pretty much said that until they get sewer, water, power, and the worst of the clean up done, no one will be allowed back. She
implied that a month was a hopeful estimate.

DivaSocialChair wrote:Yeah, well, who knows if it's correct. It's conflicting because a reporter said that some people were coming on to inspect some areas (in the area,) and the mayor is saying, "no way." They might be people who are already there on Galveston, just going out to their property after staying at a hotel, or it may be people coming on from another direction to the Bolivar area, but not Galveston. ??? |

Been watching this thread since it started. I'm glad that all the Sucksters who've checked in are okay, and my thoughts are still with those who
haven't! We're getting some of Ike's remnants in Pittsburgh right now. The winds are really whipping around outside, although I;m sure it's
nothing compared to what those of you down south had to go through.
I have a cousin (a cousin that I've never actually met due to the fact that she lives in Texas and the rest of the family is in Western New York, but still family nonetheless) who lives three blocks from the break wall in Galveston. Nobody knows if she evacuated or not. My mom's trying to get a hold of some of the other family members to see if they've heard anything. Anybody else see this? Order To Vacate Bolivar Peninsula, Galveston County, Texas, it says that the Bolivar Peninsula area is estimated to be 90% destroyed, and that Ike caused "widespread and severe damage, injury, loss of life and property".

Just bumping so it's easy for die and SK to find if they check in.
Hope you're both doing OK. If I can do anything at all, let me know. |

Power is back for me. Some fence blew down in the backyard, and part of a tree snapped off and fell in the front yard. The rest of my family don't have power yet, so everybody came over. Four dogs in the house now. |

Garblue, so glad to hear you and yours are okay. Sounds like you got a hurricane party of your own with all the folks staying there. Now are we talking big
dogs or little dogs? Cause to me, four little dogs equal two big dogs.
Thanks for letting us know how you're doing. |
