Anti will be fine, you guys. I have complete confidence he'll make it the whole 3 months without any problem.

You're going to love it at Target! Will you get a headset?
Tell us some lol-type roomie anecdotes. And YES this is so beagle-esque. |

Anti, you're such a worrier!
I checked the weather for Portland, Oregon today and it was sunny, 81 degrees during the day and 56 degrees at night and mornings. http://www.weather.com/ou...Oregon&from=searchbox Typical Northern West Coast weather, like it is here in Berkeley. If you find that freezing, then you forgot about the Minnesotta winters. You'll do just fine. Like I told you before elsewhere, you're much too talented to fail anywhere you go. Take the leap, and you'll always land safely. Soon, maybe this weekend, I'll start a thread in Off Topic about Bill Watterson. I'll try to post a Calvin and Hobbes cartoon every day, to keep you entertained. But STOP the worry and the negative thoughts!

Anti - good luck to ya. I did almost the EXACT same thing you just did, except I moved from Michigan to Colorado Springs. I knew exactly 1 person, who was my
ex. I didn't have a job, but I got a temp job for 3 weeks then got a job with the local sheriff's dept as a 911 dispatcher. I made friends and settled
in. Explore the town, read about it online, enjoy the scenery.
Good luck and don't give up now :) |

Day 8
I don't remember how much sleep I got last night, maybe 5 hours, but at any rate I'm pretty sure it wasn't enough. As I wrote the last entry this morning, you can guess that my mood was pretty low. Then I called the folks at Target, and they snuck me in for an interview in the afternoon. I think it went pretty good, though they let me go with a "we'll call you" which makes me worry. But now my biggest worry is getting sick and missing orientation or something. Since I worry about getting sick all the time, maybe it's a good sign that I'm back to that. They also said they could only really give me 20-30 hours a week, which is a bummer not just because I need money but because work is something to do so I don't go insane. And even that's not as much of a worry anymore because I did manage to get my PS3 working with a relatively simple solution proffered by my streetwise brother. It involved axle grease and tango music. Sucks on a square 17" SDTV but I know better than to complain about the few things I've got. So things are slowly falling into place. A hearty yayyums! to that. |

Tango music, eh? Mambo would have been better.
Glad to know things are looking up. |

Deep breaths and SERENITY NOW, dude. |

I think anyone who has ever done (or been forced to do) a "start over with nothing" sort of move like this is really rooting for you, Anti - and we know that this is something that you'll look back on as a period that changed your life even though it is sucking a little at first. Hang in there. |

My advice. Since you have a bit of free time, take up something you can do outside every day. Jog, bike or walk. Pick a route, bring your ipod and repeat the
route every day or two. Soon you will feel at home in your neighbourhood.

Wow Anti. You are freaking out more then I did when I moved. Though at least you went out and had that job interview. That is a step in the right direction.
Once you have a routine and make some friends at work I think you will start to feel better about things. Don't give in and go home. You will get used to
this and if you don't at least give it a try you are going to feel like a failure.

Anti, most retail places are not hiring fulltime hours right now. My advice would be to get either a second job or see if you can get a night stock shift at
target, as I think those folks get more hours. Of course the number of hours you get will increase the better you are at the job--be adaptive, available, and
think outside the box without screwing up.

Day 9
Every day I've been waking up between 5 and 6 am, regardless of when I fall asleep. Dunno why yet, though obviously it has a lot to do with stress and uneasiness. Most of my underlying fears have now switched to fears of getting sick, which is an underlying fear I had at home, so maybe that's a good sign. Am I settling in here? Yes and no. I'm settling in to the hour-to-hour routine. The day-to-day routine is still daunting. Cable is still six days away and who knows when the job will start if I even get it (I still have to do drug testing and orientation and all). I didn't often just sit and watch cable but it's definitely going to be a hobby for me here. So yesterday I was taken to the Iron Artist festival in Southeast. This is some street thing where people take scrap and recycled stuff and make things out of them, and there's a contest and music and costumes and a big whoop-de-doo. I had no idea what was going on, but I did know that I was being shown part of the "real" Portland, which is young, crazy hippies. They were all having fun. I'm glad for them. Still extremely bored and extremely homesick. There is quite a lot that I miss. |

Chin up, Anti. It's hardly been a week since you landed, right? You are not gonna get sick and your gonna feel more comfortable as time goes on. Pretty
soon you'll look back and think "what the heck was I so worried about".

Anti, waking up early may have something to do with the difference in time zones from home.
Instead of focusing so much on all the things stressing you out, try to spend a little bit of time feeling proud of yourself for what you've done. Considering the way you describe yourself, this is huge and you deserve to feel good about each day that you hang in there. I'm glad you are determined to give it at least a little time. A month isn't very long but it's probably a managable amount of time for you to commit right now. Don't think too far ahead, just one day at a time. Portland has an incredible public transportation system. You could buy a day pass and just go out and explore. Try to make the most of your opportunity here. Also, Target hires a lot of younger folks and lots of them aren't that dependable. I'd be willing to bet that, if you get the job, you'll get more hours than they are telling you just by being dependable and flexible and willing to do different kinds of jobs there. Good luck, Anti. I'm really pulling for you. |
