Ash - not the same feed, but I just found the current match (Nadia - Na) on another one. The quality is the worst I've ever seen... I think it's just a
guy's webcam fixed upon his TV!, and there's no sound... but it's better than nothing. Nadia's close to winning the match in straight sets. The
Safina - Wms. match should be up immediately following its conclusion, I believe.

The Kremlin Cup's down to the QF's. Elena and Nadia are playing right now, the latter just having made major breaks to tie it at a set apiece.
The place is a mausoleum, fan-wise - I just took this screencap of an above-court shot...

Direct link for the Dinara - Vera match that's presently live (it's an excellent feed):
Kremlin Cup WTA - 2nd SF Vera just rolled in the 1st set, 6-2... so you figure it's over, right? Elena and Jelena have already played. Elena bageled Jelena in the 1st set. Jelena then ROLLED over Elena, winning 0-6, 6-1, 6-0!! Turnarounds can happen, as this shows!! Nothing at all against Vera... but I want a Jelena - Dinara final!! OH, and if I've calculated correctly, Dinara moved up to #2 in the rankings with her win in the QF yesterday.
ETA: This is, in a way, my favorite tournament on the whole tour. There's a small brass band playing during the breaks... they played 'Tequila' during the last one. ETA2: Vera wins, 6-2, 7-6(5), and has almost certainly now secured a spot for herself in the YEC's. She'll move up to #8 in the world regardless of the outcome in the Final tomorrow. I believe that the 18th tourney which will drop-off for JJ is worth 90 points... so she, at the LEAST, has a current net gain of 210 points with her performance in this year's Kremlin Cup. If that 18th does indeed have a value of 90, JJ's point lead over the world #2 come Monday, Dinara - will be 658 points... and if she wins tomorrow, it balloons even more, to 788 points!! Year-end #1, here we freakin' come!! GO JJ!!!

MOSCOW, Oct 11 (Reuters) - The top players could boycott next year's WTA Tour if their questions were left unanswered, world number three Dinara Safina said on Saturday. The Russian said the players were unhappy with the cvhanges to the schedule being made. "If they (WTA) don't listen to what we have to say we might even choose to boycott the new tour," Safina told reporters after losing 6-2 7-6 to compatriot Vera Zvonareva in the Kremlin Cup semi-finals. "They said the leading players would have to play in designated tournaments while lower-ranked players would be able to enter any event they like. There's no logic in that at all. "What if all the top players choose to enter the same tournament? What will the WTA do then? We want to know," added Safina. Under the so-called Road Map 2010, 26 Tier One and Tier Two events will be combined into 20 Premiere tournaments with players committed to play in at least 10. Four $4.5 million tournaments in Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid and Beijing will be mandatory for all players who qualify. MANDATORY EVENTS Below the mandatory events will be five $2 million stops in Canada, Dubai, Rome, Cincinnati and Tokyo, of which the top-ranked players must play at least four. The WTA has committed to having at least seven of the world's top 10 players at each of these events. Players will complete their schedules by competing in at least one or two $700,000 events. "There are a lot of grey areas," said Safina. "No one seems to understand which tournaments you can play and which you can't." Her thoughts were echoed by Zvonareva and compatriot Svetlana Kuznetsova. "I was told only two players from the top 10 could enter a smaller tournament like the Kremlin Cup next year," said world number seven Kuznetsova. "What if (world number one) Jelena Jankovic and Serena or Venus (Williams) want to play here? "Then all the top Russian players, and there are five of us in the top 10, will not be able to play in their home tournament. That's nonsense." Safina, who will rise to a career-high number two when the new rankings are released on Monday, said the leading players will get together at next month's season-ending WTA Championships in Doha to share their concerns. WTA officials were not available for comment. |

Good article, Gnarls. I think that there's got to be some misinterpretation going on with the lower tourneys,
'cause I can't see the WTA restricting top players from entering them. That's exactly the opposite of what
they're trying to do - get a better spread of marquee players in all the tournaments. The part about having to play in the Premiere tourneys totally makes
sense as it's laid out in the article. Be ready for likely fireworks as Indian Wells approaches next March.
There's some good stuff this week. The WTA is in Zurich this week, and has a number of the top women playing. The big tourney of the week is with the guys, though - a Masters series event, in Madrid. Nadal had a tough match last night vs. Gulbis, while Blake was sent packin'; Davydenko, Ferrer, and Gonzalez all got booted today. Jonesy, your boy Tommy plays against Roddick today, with a scheduled start in half an hour... things are behind, though, so it'll surely start much later, I think. I believe that it's on the main court, upon which the Federer vs. Stepanek match still has to be played. GREAT online sports-viewing link, here. When there, click on the listing of an event and it'll expand, showing viewing channels. The ("No" requiere software) links are the ones you want to try if you don't have any of the special viewers / players installed on your machine. http://www.rojadirecta.com/ |

I wonder if any of you other extreme tennis followers knew of this poor fellow... I just chanced upon this news item a few moments ago. I don't happen to
recollect his name.
To freakin' die less than a week after making what he might have presumed was going to be a short-term visit to the hospital... ATP Pro Federico Luzzi Passes Away Italian ATP pro Federico Luzzi died Saturday morning in a Florence, Italy hospital. The 28-year-old went to a hospital for an illness earlier this week and was discovered with a accute case of leukemia. He went into an irreversible coma Saturday morning, and passed away soon after. ATP Chairman Etienne de Villiers said, "Losing a young man so tragically in the prime of his life , a son to a loving family and a great sportsman is a terrible blow. Federico was hugely respected by his fellow professionals and was one of the most popular players on the ATP Tour. Federico will be much missed by all who knew him and the thoughts and the prayers of everyone at the ATP are with Federico's family on this very sad day for tennis. Luzzi, a native of Arezzo, Italy, turned pro in 1998 and he compiled his best season in 2001 when he finished with a year-end high No. 96. That year he reached the quarterfinals in Barcelona, his best ATP result, and won two Challenger titles. He also made his Davis Cup debut. This year Luzzi attempted to qualify in three ATP level tournaments and he competed in six Challengers, playing his last event in Todi, Italy last month. He is survived by his father, Maurizio; mother, Paola; and older sister, Francesca.
Tennis player Luzzi dies of leukemia Associated Press October 25, 2008 at 2:53 PM EDT ROME - Federico Luzzi, a former top-100 tennis player, has died of leukemia. He was 28. Luzzi died at a hospital in Arezzo, the Italian Tennis Federation said Saturday. He had been there for a few days after retiring last weekend from an Italian league match citing a high fever. Luzzi reached a career-high ranking of No. 92 in 2002 before a shoulder injury that affected him the rest of his career. He had a 2-2 record with Italy's Davis Cup team. In 2001, Luzzi beat Ville Liukko of Finland 14-12 in the fifth set after 4 hours, 35 minutes - the longest Davis Cup match ever played by an Italian. In February, Luzzi was suspended for 200 days and fined US$50,000 by the ATP for betting on tennis. Luzzi is survived by his parents, Paola and Maurizio, and his sister, Francesca. |

Guys, there's some GREAT tennis on tap for the rest of the week - the last men's tourney of the regular season,
the Paris Masters, is happening. The round of 16 is being played today, and there's an excellent feed for it at JustinTV.
A rematch of the Aussie Open final, Djokovic vs. Tsonga, just started!! ATP - Paris Masters Also, a quick burst of a bunch of information: - Safin's mulling retirement, following a quick exit from this week's Masters tournament. - A study has revealed that players should challenge 'OUT' calls, not ones that are called 'IN'. There's scientific evidence that they're significantly more likely to win challenges of the former. - And... the YEAR END NUMBER ONE's are finalized!!!
