I'm baptised and that means I'm going to heaven. I don't have to do anything else. See you there!

(I'm probably the dummy of the group for giving a serious reply...but as a resident OT pastor I'll throw in my two cents)
My particular (protestant non-denominational Christian) belief is that baptism is something that happens at the point of (or sometime following) conversion. If I baptize an adult who hates Jesus, it's not a baptism, it's going for a swim. Baptism requires the confession of faith. The imperative to "go out and baptize" comes also with the imperative to teach them everything Jesus said to do...you don't get one without the other. However, the early church moved toward infant baptism after the doctrine of original sin was flushed out thinking baptism would wash away the sin the child was born into. While I don't share that theological stance, I respect the parents who feel strongly led to baptize their infants, and recognize the statement that makes regarding the importance of faith in life. We often re-baptize adults who were baptized as infants but after conversion they want to choose to get baptized. We won't re-baptize someone who was already baptized at an age of consent. Our church actually doesn't let people get baptized until they're 12 years old though I've pressed for some in my youth group at 11 or so since 12 falls half way through my middle school kids' age spectrum. We'll be having what we call a "baby dedication" in a few weeks for our newborn son. It's like the infant baptism without the baptism.

Hey Sawsuage,
I was baptised at 3months old (which was about a month before i formed my first opinion ... lol ) and since then i have been a God Mother, to a child also baptised at 3 months... Being baptised has given me the opportunity to attend a catholic school, which i would have rathered NOT attend... and also it will give me the chance to get married in a beautiful big church one day... But i only wanna marry in one for the photos... Baptism in my opinion, is a thing parents do for themselfs, incase something happens to their baby... Gives them the idea that the child will end up in a special place and be looked after. My friends have had to be baptised for marriage, and they were no better or worse off waiting till their mid 20's... I suppose, if you're ready then your child is too :) |
