I was reading my Runner's magazine and boom Rudy was in it! It's great to see that he's still active and in a positive way! I
thought maybe y'all would be interested, especially any runners out there who happen to be in love with Survivor like myself.
Runners test their survival skills on a Navy SEALs course
Getting up on a Saturday to race five miles, crawl through sand pits, and haul your body over a wall while Navy SEALs yell at you and sirens blare might not be your idea of a day at the beach. But for some 400 runners who gathered for Rudy's SEAL Challenge on June 21, it was just that.
"It's a lot more interesting than runing in the street," says Bryan Storholm, 29, of Virginia Beach, Virginia.
It's no wonder so many people think runners are gluttons for punishment. The event, in its fourth year, was held on a Virginia Beach naval base that is a training site for the SEALs, the elite military force known for its rigorous fitness standards. The race was launched by Rudy Boesch, a highly decorated ex-SEAL who became one of the first reality TV stars when he appeared on the original season of Survivor in 2000.
Boesch, now 80, brought his gritty energy to the event, high-fiving runners as they scurried between obstacles. Virginia Beach resident David Bauman, 31, won the men's division in 29:24, while Bethany Rahall, 18, of Yorktown took the owmen's title in 33:36.
Despite the grueling terrain, many of the muddy, sand crusted finishers - who ranged in age from 7 to 86 - vowed that they'd be back for more.
"It's awesome," says Cathy Grant, 42, of Suffolk. "It's the best race I've ever been in."
