Those were Peggy's sister's kids. Did you notice the look her sister got when her mom was braggin about Peggy? I think the older sister resents Peggy and she was probably the apple of Mom's eye their whole lives. And now, even with a baby out of wed lock and perhaps a couple months in the looney bin, mom is still bragging about peggy even though sis has to take care of her bastard child so that Peggy isn't tarnished.

Granted, Sis had a "matronly" dress and hairdo, but then again, we're viewing things through contemporary eyes. Plus, Sis was sitting next to a
30ish man at Mass, who very well could be her husband, and the father of the older kiddies in the bedroom. Seeing as he wasn't present at dinner, he could
be someone with a shitty night shift job, and that would also explain why they are presumably living with Mama Olsen, until they could afford their own place.
Just speculation, of course, but in the absence of "facts" it would tend to make sense.

I really doubt those other children were Peggy's. If I remember right in the first episode when she shows up for work the first time she said she just
finished secretary school. Not that that proves anything in its self but mainly it doesn't fit in with her character.

certainly again even today this is not unusual. If Peggy had had two other kids that way come on would she have been shocked as she was? NO.
Now she wasn't in the loony bin... that reference was in regards to state law at the time which did NOT allow a mother to give up her kid so freely.. remember people this was 1960. She was probably declared "incompetent" and the child given to her mother until Peggy became of a right mind to take her child... so that is why the sister made the comment... remember again.. no abortion and adoption isn't what it is today.. Women went to "homes" and the Catholics ran the largest Good Shepard homes for unwed mothers until the 70s. . There slutty Catholics hid until the baby was born.. they were quietly adopted or went home to be the sister of the mother.. this is quite true and well documented. So Peggy was probably shoved in one of those to force her to bond with her kid.. it failed. Shock there. Valium anyone? As far as the sister goes.. where is her husband? Probably the whole family conceived in that fashion... shit anyone here Catholic? Suppression anyone? |

I went to a family part when I was I think 22 and I met my aunt's son. Her 40 year old son, that I had no idea about, that she had given up. Apparently
everyone else in the family older than me knew all about this, not a real secret, just nothing anyone would talk about. If asked point blank if my aunt had a
child they would have said yes, but when listing the kids in the family he never came up. Plus there was a case in my extended family of Mom, really being
Grandma and Sister really being Mother.

In the 1950s and 1960s, a young unwed mother would sometimes give her baby to a relative (usually her mother) to raise so that the child would be
"legitimate" and untainted by scandal. Grandma would become the kid's "mother" and the biological mother would become the kid's
much older "sister." I knew two people in different families who grew up in that situation and didn't learn the truth until they were adults
(one guy was over 40 before he learned the truth). In Peggy's case, her baby went to her sister (assuming that is her sister), and her kid will grow up
knowing her as "Aunt Peggy."
Actor Jack Nicholson and singer Bobby Darin reportedly grew up in this kind of re-shaped 'family' (with their older sister actually being their mother). Peggy also probably had a "nervous breakdown" and spent some time in a mental hospital after giving birth. This would also be kept secret and explained away with the "fat farm" cover story. It's possible that Don knows more about what really happened to Peggy than he's letting on. In that time, a true gentleman would help Peggy keep her secret. And yes, it is very possible for a girl/young woman to be in denial throughout her pregnancy. I knew two young women who concealed/denied their pregnancies until they went into labor (and they lived at home and their parents had no idea). One of them did this in the 1980s, not that long ago. I'm sure it still happens today. It's extremely traumatic for a young inexperienced girl to deal with an unplanned pregnancy. Sometimes it's just easier to ignore what's happening (hard to believe, but true).

My mother had no idea she was pregnant with me until her 5th month, because she still had a period. It happens.
Plus, don't forget: Peggy was on the pill.

Another wonderful episode. Brought back memories of my parents' bridge club in the 60s, and how my mother would serve cheesecake with cherries on top, and have bowls of bridge mix and peanuts sitting around. And they'd all get tanked, and one of my father's co-workers would chase me around making inappropriate drunken comments. I was just a little kid. Hey Mrs. Peel, I remember those bridge nights at my grandparents' house too (late 60's though). They would drink out of those tall, frosted glasses that hit your nose when you try to take a sip, so they had to be "refreshed" often. I laughed out loud at that scene, 'cause I remember getting refills on occasion for the bridge players when I was about 5 or 6 years old. Typically a Tom Collins or a Highball. And then the Catholic guilt stuff. Peggy can't do communion you know, she's a sinner. That scene was painful to me, and the look on her face was perfect. My mom skipped communion for thirty years, starting with her sinful divorce in the early 60's, and she always had a blank look on her face when the rest of the family walked past her to receive communion. Kind of like she felt that everyone knew her sins, and so she needed to go vacant to deal with not just the guilt but the fact that the whole church was passing judgment. Damn that pisses me off when I think back on it. Oh, and my two favorite props. That funny wafer catcher at communion time . . . those always tickled my throat because they were so cold. And that vacuum cleaner. That looked like the same model we had (my mom still has it in the garage, and it still works!). It weighed like forty pounds and gave you a backache every time you pulled it across the floor. |

I must have missed something too because I still don't understand the significance of the vacuum. It seems she borrowed it and that was the reason for her
trip to her family's apartment... to return it. (The mother did ask if she brought it with her.)
By the way, I'm pretty sure the sister's husband was in church with them. He was in the same pew, wearing a brown suit and received communion right before them. Also, he's listed in the episode credits. |

yeah, betty never actually found out don was cheating.
she strongly suspected it. so she tried her friends trick of calling numbers from the phone bill and she learned that don was in frequent contact with her shrink. she used her next session with the shrink to tell don, via the shrink, that she "knew" he was cheating. |
