Rock isn't dead, it's fragmented. We can all agree on the most important bands in the early days of rock: Elvis/Beatles/Stones/Dylan/Hendrix. But after
the late sixties/early seventies music became a marketable commodity under the control of media conglomerates. They don't care if music is innovative or
cool or intereting; all they care about is whether an artist can deliver a profitable demographic to advertisers.

As a classic rock fan, I too found rock life in the 80s leaving much to be appreciated. But I came around, finally appreciating Metallica, Alice in Chains,
Sound Garden, Stone Temple Pilots, Disturbed, System of a Down, and others. As such, I have no concerns for modern or future rock. It will always be.

The interesting thing to me is how little music has changed in the past 25 years.
I heard "Allison" by Elvis Costello on the radio the other day. That song is over 30 years old, and fit in just fine with the current music that was being played on that radio station. It made me think about some kid in 1976 listening to a song from 1946 -- it just didn't happen. BTW: the most important band in the past 25 years was the Replacements. Period. |

Rock and Roll is most certainly NOT dead.
many of the best rockers from the "Golden Era" are still alive and still making music. They're old but they're not all dead yet! |

You didn't ask if it was rock and roll or not.

So, are we all agreed that Rock 'N Roll isn't dead, it's just on a feeding tube for about another 20 years when we won't be able to remember
who those rock 'n rollers were, or where we left our dentures. Thank god we'll have Depends and Survivor reruns to yack about.

Thank you screerider for mentioning Metallica, because I just couldn't believe they weren't mentioned.
Also....where's KISS? People will be talking about them forever. |

Yeah, there are lots of geriatric rockers still playing shows -- no one disputes that. But none of them are musically relevant.
When was the last time Kiss or Aerosmith or U2 or Metallica or any other band mentioned did anything innovative or even interesting? Their 'new' music is no different (except worse) than what they did 20 or 30 years ago. |

Hey hey my my rock n roll will never die. Must add Neil Young to the list as well as my personal favourites Stevie Ray Vaughan (arguably more blues than rock
but what the Hell), The Tragically Hip and Big Sugar.
