I don't get port forwarding either. I just pick a random port and it seems to work fine.

Funny story, back in 9th grade (1999) I got on Napster to download the song Seek and Destroy by Metallica. Before that I just searched different websites, but I asked someone where they got theirs and they referred me to Napster. After about 6 months or so, I get online only to see "You've been banned by Metallica" so I figured some way to get back on (you had to fuck with the registry or something) and from there on my username was MetallicaKiktMeOff (because the correct spelling was taken). The last CD I bought for myself was a couple months later when I bought the S&M (Symphony and Metallica) 2 disc set. But pretty much all of my Metallica MP3s were ripped off my friend's CDs. |

hwamf makes a valid point. I will have my IT people fix it next time I'm in NY.

NAA- do you have a router, or are you just connected through a modem? If you have a router, you need this
page. If you just have a firewall, I think you probably still need that page

Thanks, Marty. My modem isn't listed.

That's a pretty good site. You'll be looking for your router, not your modem NAA.
The router acts as a firewall, allowing only certain ports to be exposed to the outside world. You don't need most ports open, just those for email ( 25 ) and Web ( 80 ) for example. Some games, file sharing applications and such will want to communicate across a specific port. Some are reserved for other purposes, but above a certain number it is all pretend anyhow, so you can choose 'port 10,000' and so long as you are broadcasting that you are using 'port 10,000' by a setting in uTorrent, for example, you will need to tell your router / firewall to allow all port 10,000 traffic to pass through. WolfD: The default random port may work if you don't have any firewall at all ( eek! ) . You can also use many file sharing programs like uTorrent without technically using port forwarding / NATing, but your download speeds will suck balls. Oh, and heed Slippy's advice about PG2! Some snoops will get into the 'swarm' of file sharers and then they will be able to see your IP address. Then they can contact your ISP and you'll get the threatening letters and such. At some point your ISP will be more afraid of the MPAA or whatever than losing a leech such as yourself. Just Google Peer Guardian 2 - It will filter all traffic and block you from sharing with The Man! |

Thanks for the heads-up about Peer Guard, Slip and KF! I was just going to use my neighbor's unsecured wireless network when downloading anything that may
be actionable.

That made more sense before the edit.Yeah I noticed right as I submitted that, but then I had to pretend I was working. Where's my job offer naa? I'm thinking a nice $200k 24 hour work week would be nice. |

You ARE doing this because you want to fill your iPod with downloaded music right ? it also will exclude the addresses known to "poison" the stream of data. Now - lets get back to that "why". If you think you are going to download lots of stuff - particularly applications or games - and not have to be VERY carefull about virus and trojan protection then you might as well carve "VICTIM" in your forehead now. Stick to music. the movies suck, and everything else is packed with malicious code. Bit Torrent is not for sissys or those who are less than vigilant. Oh and A L W A Y S do your torrent searching at the secure isohunt site https://isohunt.com that way your IP address is untraceable for downloading the torrent files too.

Stick to music. the movies suck, and everything else is packed with malicious code.TV shows make good torrents, too. Big healthy seeder pool, little to no interest from "the man", almost always recorded in HD, and little risk of viruses if you stick to the recent episodes with thousands of peers. My Dish Network DVR won't let me record shows to my MP3 player. Using bittorrent, I can download this week's Weeds episode in less than 15 minutes and watch it on my lunch break. |
