I don't see "Watchmen" turning into a $300 million phenomenon, so if that's what the studio is expecting it will be disappointed. Comics fans
will turn out; some will whine if they change one word of dialogue or move one button on a costume, but most of us will appreciate seeing one of our favorite
stories on the screen.
I see two problems inherent in making a "Watchmen" movie: (1) non-comics fans will be confused -- "I've never heard of these characters. Who's the Nite-Owl? Is he supposed to be Batman? This is stupid." They won't understand why this story is such a big deal, so either they won't go or they'll be disappointed. (And it wouldn't have helped to use the old Charleston characters, either) and (2) Watchmen is 20-some years old now. What made the story so amazing way-back-when is that it was the first 're-thinking' of the basic superhero story, treating them as people and asking what would happen if they lived in the real world. "Watchmen" influenced a whole generations of writers and artists and is largely responsible for how comics are written nowadays. So, basically, non-comic fans are still about 40-50 years behind where comics are now -- the most successful superhero movies (eg, Batman Begins, Iron Man, Spiderman) are the ones that stick closely to the original old stories --- and comic fans (esp. the young ones) have come to expect the high level of storytelling that "Watchmen" created. (Of course the fanboy in me says "Holy shit! I can't wait to see this movie!" I'm going to see Dark Knight in about 2 hours, and all I can think about is the Watchmen trailer. .. .)

Beefcake, if they would've went with Hayter's original script, which brought it into present time, it may have solved one of your problems. I guess
substitute George Bush for Nixon. I don't know.
The trailer was awesome. |

and remember, in the time of "Watchmen", the world is on the brink of nuclear war. American forces conquered Vietnam (Dr. Manhattan pretty much
murdered entire Vietcong) and made its 51st state. The whole Vietnamese force wants to be personally surrender to Dr. Manhattan. Nixon serves like 6 terms.
Soviets are very, very afraid of USA because of Dr. Manhatta's ability to defuse nuclear weapons.

I suppose I'll always worry about superhero movies. Will it be Spider-man or the Fantastic Four? Batman Begins or Superman Returns? It seems like the
studios have learned to not mess with the stories, but you never know. I suspect Watchmen will stay faithful to the story, I just question how much crossover
appeal it will have to non-fans.
For instance, I saw the Watchmen trailer this morning before Dark Knight, and it was met with complete silence. The Day the Earth Stood Still and Tropic Thunder got applause. It was a big audience (at least 200 people at 10:00 am -- typically shows at this time have 5-20 people at them) of people who came to see Batman, but they seemingly had no interest (or recognition) of Watchmen. BTW: Dark Knight did NOT disappoint. Holy shit! Fan.Frakking.Tastic. |

Cool, they included the scene where Rorschach torches the child murderer.
I don't think it's way too early for the trailer. Iron Man teasers were relased like a year and a half before the movie |

They include that, Buggle?
That is an important scene. |

You can check out the Video Journal here - Gibbons talks a lot
about how faithful the adaptation is.
I know that the practice has been to put trailers out super-early and maybe they need to this time, given how few people seem to know about the Watchmen in general, but I hate seeing trailers for months on end - especially since they tend to become more spoilery with time. Of course, that doesn't mean that I haven't watched the HD trailer about 50 times already. |

As often as I've read Watchemen, there's nothing in any trailer that could be a spoiler for me.

the big advantage to a movie like this is that it's based on one novel, rather than 50 years of comics. So as long as they stick to the story, it's hard for anyone to fuck it up too badly. But most superhero movies are like one story arc in a comic book, Watchmen was an entire graphic novel, how can they fit it all? ANYONE criticizing Watchmen (aka the greatest comic story written EVER) needs to go FOAD right now. This is a classic along the lines of Shakespeare in the modern era. Many colleges already have Watchmen on their required reading lists. |

Its not so much that people are criticizing the story as much as right now people are criticizing the studio for going forward with the project, seeing as the
only way it can be profitable is if the movie is REALLY good and overcomes the barrier of lack of recognition.
Plus, if the movie is really run of the mill or just bad, people will complain (bitterly) that the story was not done justice and that that is why it fails. |

Well, at 12 issues, it's about the length of two story arcs, so it could be doable. The thing that worries me is that they've produced a cut at the 3
hour mark that the director feels tells the whole story and he still has to cut it down to 2 1/4.
It's seems as if this would have been better as a miniseries, but I'm still going to see it. At least they didn't try to "update" it - I can't even imagine the disaster that would have been. |
