So... "colored people" = bad, "people of color" = good. Somebody explain that.

I agree "that's so gay" is wrong to say, but "the gay guy" and "the colored person" don't hold the same weight for me. "Colored" just comes off as wrong to me. |

My mom uses the term "colored" and it makes my skin crawl mainly because in the era of segregation "colored" was
the term that was used to label the things and areas that black people were limited to using. The term is derogatory by todays standards in mostly because of the history involved with it reflects a time of government sanctioned discrimination. But I don't hate Steven anymore than my mother for saying it although I don't approve and wouldn't say it myself. My mom came from a generation when it was the PC term in the fifties and doesn't understand that refrigerators are no longer called "ice-boxes" for christs sake. As for Steven I assume he's a victim of his southern roots/environment. He seems like a genuinly nice guy and was even rubbing Libra's leg comforting her during thier heart to heart tonight when she was crying. She immediatly trashed him when he left the room BTW. People will always say stupid things! Every person has. |

BOY did I get that wrong. The minister wrote a nasty letter to my boss and tried to get me fired. Fortunately my boss was very cool and explained to me that black was the term, and not colored. He laughed and said go back to work. That was almost 20 years ago now, and I don't say it anymore of course...but until this happened I had not idea that what I had said was wrong. I grew up in another part of Houston, which is VERY black, and I didn't know about the 'colored' thing until I was 25?? How does this happen? Anyway, just trying to make a point that until someone tells you, if you've heard it all your life, HOW exactly do you know otherwise? By the way, I am SO not racist...have many black friends and dated men who are black. How you title people is all about what you hear when you're growing up with your grand parents, etc. On another note...I've been trying to find someone/something that puts Stevens as being from The Woodlands and can't come up with shit...and I'm
good at digging up shit...everything I find points to Dallas...can't figure this one out.

By the way, I am SO not racist...have many black friends and dated men who are black. How you title people is all about what you hear when you're growing up with your grand parents, etc. That is and isn't true. My parents and grandparents came from Georgia farmers and they used the word colored all the time. It's just how the people out in the country described black people back then. My grandparents were total bigots and my parents mildly bigoted. (My father more so than my mom.) But even when I was little, I knew that how they talked about black people was wrong (maybe because unlike them, I grew up in the big city instead of the country). I'd sometimes feel angry and ashamed at some of the stuff they said and did and called them on it. So even though I grew up around it, I've never used the term colored in my life. But just because someone uses the term, it doesn't necessarily make them a bad or even a prejudiced person. My mom had lots of black friends, she still does. So ignorant, maybe. Product of his enviorment, probably. I just hate that he's being judged on this one comment because all in all, he seems like a nice guy. |

I'm so torn between who I like and who I don't. I want to like Steven. His comments (and alliance with Douchey Dan) bother me. But the sock puppet
show was great.

That's what showed up on the screen on the first episode of BB when they were showing him out at the corral. Apparently, he was born in Lousiana, spent some time in Dallas and now lives in The Woodlands. I'm not sure that he's racist, but seems like he should've been around enough black people to know that "colored" is not a good way to describe a black (yes, even in the days of "African-American", "black" will suffice the vast majority of the time) person. Maybe he'll refer to her as a darkie the next time. |

I'm down with the Steven love, especially since he stood up to that bitch Libra and put her in her place about what a hypocrite she was being.

I like Stephen. He ain't perfect, but he is real. I don't think he will be around long. The pack mentality has set already set in and Stephen and Dan
are gonna be the primary targets the next 2 weeks. I only hope Stepehen sticks around long enough for the High Horse Alliance to fracture.
