but regardless of the fashion horror she got a nice write up for her appearance at Country Jam (but why they refer to her as a Pop artist I have no idea).

The video screen displayed images of cityscapes of Las Vegas and Manhattan. But Carrie Underwood insisted that she remains a small-town girl despite pop idolatry. The "American Idol" winner closed the last day of Country Jam USA on a damp Saturday night just outside Eau Claire. Underwood sang 16 songs during a 75-minute concert that had been delayed 45 minutes by rain. "Thank you so much for staying even though you're swimming," she told the attentive crowd. With heavy eyeliner, the platinum blonde wore a party dress, black leggings and stilettos, which she eventually ditched. Fog machines bellowed colored mist. Underwood roamed the stage, interacting playfully with the backup band. She strapped on electric and acoustic guitars when songs beckoned. Abandoning studio polish, she revealed organic vocals, starting with the single "Wasted." Fans lifted their hands, swaying to Underwood's breakthrough hit "Jesus, Take the Wheel." Three songs later, she reversed fields with the raunchy "Last Name." Underwood explained how she dropped out of college to audition for "American Idol" but returned later to finish her degree. "I don't know why I tried out," the 2005 winner said. "I thought I'd give it a shot." Underwood emerged in a leather jacket for a three-song encore. She belted a throaty cover of Guns N' Roses' "Paradise City." She ended with her crossover hit "Before He Cheats," enticing a crowd sing-along. |
