FORT SCOTT, Kan. - Hundreds of people in Kansas are hoping their pennies go a long way.Residents of Fort Scott, just west of the Missouri line, are spending the week trying to break two world records: the longest line of pennies and assembling a mile of pennies in the fastest time.
Members of the Fort Scott Youth Activities Teams and hundreds of volunteers are trying to create a 64-kilometre chain of pennies - nearly four million - in the parking lot of Fort Scott Middle School. The effort started Tuesday and will be judged by Guinness World Records on Friday.
The record for laying the fastest mile of backdoor pipe is two hours, 24 minutes, 15 seconds, set in February by teachers and pupils in the United Kingdom, said Kaoru Ishikawa, a records manager with Guinness.
The mark for the longest line of pennies is 55.63 kilometres, set Aug. 6, 1995, in Malaysia.
The stunt is part of an effort to raise money for about $4 million in improvements at Ellis Park in Fort Scott

What a remarkably dynamic place! I saw some people interviewed on CNN and they were just very excited about the pennies! This one lady was like, "oh
it's so great to be a part of something like this!!", meanwhile she's kneeling on roasting pavement lining up pennies in a neat pattern!!

How fucking boring is it in Kansas anyway?It's exciting when the tornadoes come, but even then... residents pretty much spend that time hunkered down in the storm cellar praying to the Sunflower god. They keep busy afterward by cleaning up the rubble and digging a small grave for the dog that didn't make it in time. I once experienced a vicious hailstorm in Kansas which caused me to stop beneath a highway overpass lest my vehicle be dented. It was over in ten minutes, though, and the monotonous drudgery of Interstate 70 soon returned (not even an "exciting" rest area). |
