As some of you may have noticed, I took a short vacation from this thread when Hillary conceded. I hope you made the most of my absence, because I'm
back...and endorsing:
*drumroll*

Obama didn't refuse to release his birth certificate and DailyKos didn't chop anything when they posted a copy of Obama's real birth certificate showing he was born in Hawaii a couple years after it got statehood. But I'm glad you realize this was a non-issue. |

These non-issues distract us from the real issues such as the policies of the candidates. This was hilarious, coming from Ruggy. |

Part of me feels the New Yorker cover is some kind of genius. It embodies all the shadow talk and untruths about Obama that the right refuses to reject without
out right denying any of it. It is an embodiment of a dozen lies that are propagated every day by some of the fringe Obama haters. However itt probably should
have been in an art gallery, not a magazine cover.

Compared with some of the stuff Abe Lincoln saw published about him, this is like a complimentary little ditty surrounded by hearts and flowers.

That is true. The Abe Lincoln museum in Springfield has some pretty awesome exhibits showing a lot of the negative press Lincoln got while in office and it was
kind of astounding to see it. Everyone in OT should check out that museum regardless of their political affiliation [/Illinois tourism pimping]

The difference is, the Abe Lincoln stuff was legitimately negative and nasty, from people who did not want him
elected. The story of how he even got elected at all is so intreguing.
The New Yorker cover is a bit more complex. Its clearly negative but they're 'trying to prove a point' which we can argue that maybe they did too well. |

Right. The stuff published about Lincoln was in earnest. What the issue here amounts to is should ignorant people be shielded from satire? At least that seems
to be so since some newsstands are taking the magazine off the shelves. It's getting a little close to "thought police" to me.

Political satire has been going on since day 1.
The ditty they sang about Grover Cleveland (a NY Gov, yegads) in 1888 is hilarious "Ma Ma where's my Pa? In the White House. Ha Ha!" |

Yeah that's hilarious ....... for a 2000 year old song. The New Yorker cover failed because it wasn't funny, it was just dumb stereotyping failed
humor, like Borat but worse.

Gregoire wrote: Its real genius is that it shamelessly distorts how most conservatives (deftly broad-brushed as "the right" in your post) perceive Obama; then, having set up that straw man, it simultaneously amplifies that distortion by insisting such "fringe shadow talk and untruths" merit such an attention-whoring cover for a national magazine. If McCain's condemnation of the cover and its underlying insinuations still rates as a "refusal to reject without outright denying" any of them, I would be curious to hear how far "the right" needs to go to mollify your concerns. The cover would actually have been a pretty sly bit of satire/propaganda if the American masses possessed even the slightest appreciation for or understanding of irony. Obviously that was a brutal miscalculation on the part of the New Yorker. |

So those on the right are also embarrassed by the majority of America? See ruggy, it goes both ways! |

Gregoire wrote: well the New Yorker reached its target audience. Those dumb enough to try and blame the right for this straw man argument. Take a second and realize that all the negative portrayals of Obama as a muslim (remember the picture in tribal garb) and friend of terrorists came from the Dem primaries. McCain scolded an emcee who used Obama's middle name at a rally. Obama's followers now use that name as a campaign ploy. McCain has attacked Obama on issues only. The right has no obligation to reject an argument started by the left. |

If Obama can't take the heat from that cover, he should as Harry Truman once said, get out of the kitchen.

Did Cynthia McKinney get herself kicked out of Congo or summat?
For slapping a security guard in Congo, if she were lucky she'd have been caned on the soles of her feet and left to crawl home in disgrace. |

Obama the chickenhawk!
from his own NY Times oped:
As president, I would pursue a new strategy, and begin by providing at least two additional combat brigades to support our effort in Afghanistan. We need more troops, more helicopters, better intelligence-gathering and more nonmilitary assistance to accomplish the mission there.

I don't even like him, but there's no comparison to the Iraq war. Afghans (or people they hosted) attacked us, and Obama's daughters aren't old
enough to serve.
