That's why NFLD can rule the show up to Top 5 where then the major urban centres start voting. That's why the newfies never won yet, the whole country ends up voting at the end.

I disagree with your logic here, but the result is the same. I don't see why people from cities, who didn't vote in the semis/early finals would suddenly take an interest in contestants from their regions.

IMO, the reason that Newfies get close but don't win is this: if the Top 5 consists of several contestants that were voted through based upon their home region, then the remaining contestants from regions who don't vote are probably better (or at least more appealing to a wider audience for some reason). They managed to get to the top 5 based on talent/popularity and not the support of their home region.

At the point where several regions are eliminated (say you have a Newfie, someone from the Maritimes or Saskatchewan, and three random contesants), the voters from regions whose contestants were eliminated are more likely to vote for the best remaining contesant. This puts their vote totals above those of the contestants with regionally-based support. At this point, there may be regional voting in the sense of "anyone but the Newfie/insert region here" but I don't see it as a sudden interest among one region's voters. As a viewer, it always seems to me that it's more of a "we have to make sure that the winner isn't chosen based on where they're from" frenzy.

I don't mean if someone is from Toronto Central that those folk are going to vote based on that alone but they will finally pick up the phone and vote for whichever urban area contestant that is good and made it on talent alone. That regional voting for whichever contestant combined with votes from across the country propel the urbanite further on when it would look like they'd get cut.

Unless you are from lets say Collingwood (Toronto's cottage country) then you'll have the regional base support from the start, talent or not.

The lines start clogging here in Toronto around Top 5, before that, not so much. It's a shame though, they could really save some great people if they vote from the beginning.

Ahh. I see what you mean. I agree, and I would add that regions whose contestants were eliminated also add to the vote count of the remaining contestants from urban areas.
