Damn. Overall last night was one of the best baseball experiences I can ever remember.
1. The Cubs won. 2. The Cubs beat the hated Cardinals. 3. It was a close, intense game in the best rivalry in baseball (because the Yanks and Sawks rivalry is overrated) with first place implications. 4. I didn't have to feel too bad for my dad because he got to see Pujols hit his 300th home run. 5. Jack Buck singing the 7th inning stretch in Harry Caray glasses was pretty great. 6. Being there for Zambrano's return and the first game Edmonds played in STL as a Cub was also neat. 7. I gained a new appreciation for Kerry Wood watching him close out a 2-1 game right as the St. Louis fireworks display went off over the arch in the middle of the ninth. 8. I got to watch said fireworks punctuate the final inning and had an awesome view of them from behind home plate. That said... 1. So this was my first time at the new Busch and I must remark that Busch Stadium has one jumbotron too many. I mean it's not just the kitsch of the old scoreboard at Wrigley that I love, but also because the extra jumbotron had font too small to read for all the graphics they put with it that it was impossible to tell the scores when it came to the other games going around the league. Oh and also the promotions and advertisements were to the point it was just tacky. I mean I'm against all jumbotrons or all advertisements as I actually liked the glowing Budweiser sign with the two cardinals above the scoreboard and I'm not against video screens at ballparks, but two of them was just out of control and also looked weird because it wasn't symmetrical in the outfield. 2. While the Busch stadium exterior is OK I guess, I liked the statues outside and I appreciate all the modern amenities and the great view I had from my seats of the arch that the new park afforded me, damn if it's just not really hideous on the inside. I mean I'm sentimental as hell when it comes to sports, especially baseball, so of course I'm going to like the old park more but compared to the old Busch Stadium with that distinctive ring of arches around the place the current incarnation is just architecturally lame. 3. As much as I respect and understand the tradition of the San Diego Chicken, Phillie Phanatic and his mascot ilk, I was never more glad that the Cubs lack such a thing than before the game seeing the retarded guy in the redbird suit dressed as Uncle Sam doing all these funny dances and gestures around this veteran while his torment as a POW was being described over the PA system. Very odd scene. In any event, here's hoping the Cubbies can steal another one today. |

OK. Call it whatever you like. I just meant stealing a game because I consider any win in an away game against a good team as stealing a win.

Good, Fox decided that since I live in an NL Central market, I would prefer to watch the fucking Yankees and Red Sox today.

If the Brewers offer really is LaPorta/Green/Cain I think Melvin gets a phone call on Sunday night and the deal is completed.
This is a solid move for the Brewers in my opinion, and if they are fortunate enough to sign Sabathia to an extension it becomes a great move for the Brewers. Considering that neither Sheets or the Brewers seem to want to talk to each other I think odds are strongly, strongly against Sheets being a Brewer next year. At least with Sabathia in a Brewer uniform it would give the Brewers a foot in the door with him and if they are willing to give him the years on the contract I think they will have a decent chance of signing him. He won't get Santana money from anyone, and I think he'll get a 6-year deal max. Maybe, just maybe the market would call for a 6-year, 96 million dollar deal and I think that would fit into the Brewers budget if they want to roll the dice on that many seasons. |

Pretty much needed after dropping three straight to the Rockies.

It all depends if the Brewers want to make a push for this season with a rent a player, or keep these prospects around and contend for years to come. |

The Louisville Colonels of the American Association had the best record in all of MLB in 1890 (though tied for that honor with Brooklyn in the NL). In 1889,
they finished dead last in the majors with a suicidal .196 winning percentage.
In the modern era, several teams have gone from worst to first within their own divisions, but not since the Colonels has a club accomplished the feat for all of baseball. So far the Tampa Bay Rays are doing just that. |
