Yeah, I remember one time Dmitri and Ashlee picked out of the hat, and Cat turned it over when they were cheering, and NOTHING fell out. The doesn't mean it's not random, since they could have been the last couple to pick, or the producers do a random copmuter thing before, then just insert the one card into the hat and film the dancers picking it (it makes the show seem more fun).

But at the same time, I also have a hard time believing it's completely random. Lauren narrowly avoids elimination (unfairly), and so they give her a Wade Robson routine (last) the next week. Maybe the style it random and the choreography is not (like who decided to give Rayven and Jaimie, the unknown coupled, the crappy hip-hop routine, while Joshua/Katee, the exposed couple, get the best one). At the same time, you wonder why they would even bother to rig these things, since as someone said before, there are plenty of other ways they can manipulate the votes (false judging, contestant placement, the video segment introducing the dance). Still, I am sure that the producers have a bit of influence over who does what (a loophole of sorts), just maybe it's not so obvious as the one someone mentioned.

And Mandy Moore isn't the kiss of death (well, not last year, where she had the office dance and stuff). I have no idea what's wrong with her jazz dances this year. Her contemporary pieces are still good, though.

Has a couple ever had to perform the same genre of dance twice before making it into the Top 10?

example: Drawing a hip-hop routine in Week 1 AND Week 3. etc.
