Susan Minot is a good modern short story writer. She's done some great novel work, too.

"Recitatif" by Toni Morrison.
Anything by Flannery O'Connor, particularly "A Good Man is Hard to Find" and "Revelation." "Haunted" is a collection of creepy short stories by Joyce Carol Oates and is highly recommended. "Story of an Hour" - I can't remember the author. |

I am in love with David Sedaris. I just found out that listening to him read his stories on tape is even better then reading them.

"Gapo" by Lualhati Bautista, a local author
Which is a local book about a U.S. marine stationed in Subic Naval Base (now Subic Bay Free Zone) which is a fall in love a local woman in a city of Olongapo, which 80 miles Northwest of Manila. I bought the pocket book when I was in college and I used it on my Filipino 1 subject as the summary of all of the chapters on that book.
