She is making the show unwatchable for me. I cringe when she opens her mouth.

Yeah the production level almost made the result show unwatchable last nite. The sound was off during the performance show too. Even the Pussycats sounded
muffled and weird.
One would think that they would just keep the American Idol production crew, i guess not. That Chelsea chick reminds me of a black Lisa Rinna. |

The technical problems with last night were atrocious. Even worse than DWtS, and they have their bouts of technical goofs as well, but never so many in
just one show. One thing that I have noticed, and I only noticed it last night while watching the dances again just before the results show, is that the show
is no longer in 5.1 or Surround Sound. I thought for sure it was last year. This year, I turned on my speakers and was like, "Where's the
sound?"

Production-wise, it really does seem like last two episodes were slapped together by the interns from AI. Poor sound, poor video--I could even hear Cat's
footsteps on the little staircase as she walked up to speak to 2 dancers. What a mess.
In spite of that, I am so in love with this show it is ridiculous. My lament is that it is a competition airing on Fox. I think Nigel's heart is in the right place; bring dance to the masses and have it appreciated as an art form. But this show would be awesome without the competition aspect, and without all the AI-style cheesiness. The show really teaches so much about different dance genres, and highlights all the hard work the dancers and choreographers put into the performances. SYTYCD is almost too good for itself!!! |

I thought season 3 had the best top 20 routine.

I don't remember any of the previous Top-20 routines -- they were that memorable -- but I like to think that having that many people on stage makes it almost impossible to film the dancing and instead we're forced to watch individual or group dancers. I think this could be backed up by looking at the Top-20+ number that Oz did in their finale, where the focus was never on the entire group of dancers until the very end. They still managed to make it look decent, though.I think the top 20 Aus routine was brilliant you get to see all the dancers (in their order of elimination) + the choreographers.. and + the judges, then builds to include all dancing in complete unison. Truly one of the best routines in any season of SYTYCD look for Nigel's wife Bonnie dancing, she was a judge in early rounds in American auditions last few seasons: I am not Australian, and watched the torrents I downloaded for the Australian series, and so far it far surpasses the American version. The production and the interesting characters (including a great dancer who does drag) is outdoing the original American program. I hope that changes in the upcoming weeks. |

.. which also got me to thinking. I thought that it might have been an unfair pairing of ballroom with ballet, when all the other couples seemed to have more
contemporary styles in one of their partners. BUT I remembered that one of the best couples was a ballroom/ballet duo that had some spectacular routines in the
Aus version.. check out this Samba.. HOT HOT HOT.
Okay.. sorry for the comparisons. I guess I am just a bit disappointed with this season so far. Only 2 routines were above average in the first show, in my mind. |

SYTYCD has always had a bad reputation for sticking the dancers in some awful costumes. |

I also watched the Australian version, and the one thing they had going for them was Jason Gilkison doing modern styled ballroom routines that were uniformly
very good to great (like the Henry and Vanessa samba in the clip). There was a hip hop choreographer named Supple who was better than any hip hop
choreographer I've seen on the US version (check out this clip). But with Gilkison there, you were
guaranteed at least one stand out routine per episode (he even choreographed an exciting Waltz). I don't know if the US version has an equivalent -- Mia
and Wade are consistently good but their output is sporadic. I think the talent level of the dancers is higher in the US, but the overall strength of
choreography leans to Australia. BTW, having the judges dance in the opening number of the season finale was fantastic. Loved it.
Hold on, let me 'tard just a bit more... I have come to the conclusion that Chelsie Hightower and not Will is the Danny of season 4. She's apparently a dance prodigy, having accomplished more things between ages 11-18 than most ballroom dancers even dream of. Her CV is jaw dropping -- she's been teaching dance since she was 16 and was a part of team USA for the Blackpool competition. I am quite sure Mary knew her name immediately. She'll have to get through the requisite hip hop number, but after she draws a ballroom routine, I think she's going to explode.

What really annoys me about this season is that all of the guys are almost good looking, but none quite cross the
threshold. It's frustrating. What's the point of this show if not to look at hot, sweaty, gay and bicurious men in their sexual prime?

Hold on, let me 'tard just a bit more... Lol! Anyone care to give me a quick rundown on who the bottom 3 were and how their solos were? We went to see Wicked Thursday and my dumbass forgot to set the DVR to record this, and I don't feel like reading the last 15 pages of the thread to find out. Also, all you people who know everyone's first and last names already are freaks, lol! I probably won't remember everyone's first names until F10 or so, and probably won't ever know their last names. Crazy! |

I'm just like you...........I don't know all the names yet either.
Bottom 3 were: The first couple that danced hip-hop to American Boy. They were both eliminated after the solos. The others were the Tango couple.........the red head chick and the Debbie Allen apprentice black dude.....and the Amazon Uma girl and her beanstalk giant partner who danced to Tainted Love. All the solos pretty much sucked, by the way. But the Pussycat Dolls sucked even more. |

Thanks carboy. I knew who got kicked off, but when I asked who the other bottom 3 were, I got "That one black guy, with the kinda moustache thing, and
some other couple..." So I still had no idea.
All the solos pretty much sucked, by the way. But the Pussycat Dolls sucked even more. Well....duh... |

Just barely saw these dances on youtube. Wow. I am so looking forward to this season. There are already a few I absolutely adore and am rooting for. Liked Josh and Katee quite a bit, watching on YouTube. Josh especially has some amazing presence. He really has some grace. I'm really rooting for him and liking Katee a lot right now. Actually really liked Mark and Chelsie, too. What amazing choreography, once again, by Mia Michaels. Mark is probably one of the ones I am rooting the most for. He is just so the kind of artist I want to see make it: original, like nothing I have seen, a burst of his own energy. Chelsie I wanted to hate; but she was actually fantastic. Twitch and Kherington: Twitch was good, but I did not love him as much as I love him solo. He has some great energy, though. I am so interested to see where he goes from here. Great job for somebody who is not versed in this style. Kherington is shaping up to be one of my favorites: what amazing personality and stunning stage presence. Another one I thought I would hate. She could be a Broadway performer right now, I think. Will and Jessica: Oh wow, was Will amazing. His form and body were amazing. His face and body were strong and passionate. Jessica was not quite as startling, but I think that has a lot to do with her partner. She really worked her ass off, however. Marquis and Susie: Marquis was elegant and graceful. He had great carriage. He is someone I will watch. Susie... Hold on haters, but I ADORED her. Her sense of grace and character were so on point. she is actually somewhat manly looking, yet pulled off the ultra-femininty of the Waltz. Again, one of the women I was poised to hate. LOVED her. Thayne and Chelsea: Thayne is everything I hate about the Mormon dancing style I grew up with: cheesy grin and overly "cute." That said, his form and his character were quite impressive. He was a really good partner, really kept her going. And he's pretty hot, i admit it. Yuck. another one I was poised to hate that I kinda like. Chelesea is on fire. She has moves, she has personality, she has stage presence, she has strenth. It is hard to pinpoint stuff because she was so strong. Top Favorites: Mark, Will, Josh, Chelsie, Kherington, Chelsea. eta i changed my mind to Chelsie

I think there is a distinct possibility that Chelsea H may be the only caucasian dancer in the top 5 or 6. There are some popular, and strong, black, hispanic
and asian dancers which I think is fantastic. Chelsea T, Joshua, Comfort, Will and Twitch (I can not see Marquis going far, does not have the personality).
Katee and Mark both appear to be of Asian heritage, and could easily see them near the end. And representing for hispanics, Suzie Garcia seems to have a big
following.
The diversity is very cool. I mentioned earlier in this thread that they needed to bring Jason Gilkison to choreograph a few routines for the American version. The very first routine in the top 20 was a jive Jason choreographed to THE VERONICAS. (they are hot in Australia and I am sure Untouched will be a big hit here this Summer) It got the whole show moving right from the start . Interesting that the ballroom choreographer was the most cutting edge/exciting for the show. Supple was fantastic too. If they don't use Jason or Supple in the American version, I hope to see some of their choreography in the Canadian version.

Dang, where were all you Aussie SYTYCD fans when I was trying to talk up a storm about it months ago? (Heliox excepted) I'm glad someone else liked the
"Untouched" jive as that hooked me on both the show and the song, which the judges really didn't give enough credit since it didn't resemble
their traditional notion of what a jive should be (similar to Danny/Anya's "Girlfriend" jive) Supple/Jason Gilkison definitely need to be
imported over here for a week or two - if we can export Mary Murphy to them, they owe us one. Or maybe we're still in the hole with that deal...
Didn't see the elimination until last night, but I'm fine with it. My only observations are that Thayne looks like a more attractive version of Benji and Kourtni looks like Ashlee Simpson with short hair (possibly pre-nose job) |
