Excellent story on what really caused this "catastrophe":

I read that the houses surrounding Lake Delton that were destroyed, none of the home owners had insurance. That's really got to suck.

Today is the perfect day outside - 70 degrees, sunny, no humidity. Why can't they all be this way?

it's not just the midwest... today in Montreal was perfectly hot, humid and sunny, and all of a sudden at lunchtime there was an absolute wall of rain with
pounding thunder and lots of lightning. THEN there were reports of funnel clouds all around the city, and apparently the winds got so strong that *8* trucks
got tipped over on a bridge. Half the city also got hail the size of golfballs.
We so rarely get any crazy weather activity, especially in the city (there have been some small tornadoes in farmland), that everyone is hyped up and anxious. |

I'm back!!! I got my power back today! Thanks for asking, GNG and Undies! I had to empty the contents of my fridge and restock. Blech! Conveniently,
tomorrow is trash day. I honestly thought I wasn't going to get my power restored until Thursday, according to the news.
I consider myself lucky - no flooding. And my parents had power so I stayed with them. But damn - IT'S GOOD TO BE HOME!!!! |

Yay sniffles - glad you got your power back!
More storms for WI and MN? Ugh. Now that water is coming down the Fox and Des Plaines Rivers and starting to flood the Chicago burbs. I used to live about 2 blocks from the Fox in Aurora, but I was uphill... wonder how much water they will get. |

MONTREAL - A violent, fast-moving thunderstorm roared across Montreal and the South Shore yesterday afternoon, downing power lines, toppling trees and tipping
trucks over on the Champlain Bridge.
Gusting winds and heavy rain knocked out power to 63,000 Hydro-Québec customers on the island of Montreal and delayed flights from Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport. At 10 last night, 8,100 households on the island were still without power. With the Champlain Bridge closed in both directions for about three hours until 5:30 p.m., traffic on Highway 20 was backed up for kilometres at one point on the South Shore. In Montreal, detoured motorists and city buses were tied up in the clogged streets. The métro's Yellow Line was packed with commuters preferring to leave their cars in town and avoid the bridge. Officials reopened the bridge after righting seven tractor-trailer trucks and a large cube truck. An 18-wheeler had nearly toppled over into the St. Lawrence River. The sudden storm darkened skies shortly after 2 p.m., causing winds of up to 110 kilometres an hour in places. |

If this damn dam breaks, Hwy 83 will be wiped out! I drove over the bridge just below this dam yesterday and the water was about 2 feet from spilling over.
UPDATE: Dam fears spark warning downstreamSaturated ground on the north side of the Phantom Lake Dam has stirred concerns about the structural integrity of the dam that creates an impoundment for
Upper and Lower Phantom Lakes, Mukwonago Fire Dept. Lt. Todd Beschta said this afternoon.
