Which is better in terms of picture quality, Time Warner HD? DirecTV HD or Dish HD? Anyone ever tried all three? I know they all compress their signals for bandwidth constraints (or so they say), but I want to know which is the least of three evils. I live in the DFW area, so I can probably use an antenna to get local HD.

Local HD.
Srsly. Rabbit ear antenna will pick up a superior uncompressed picture if you're lucky. My issue is that it lags behind analog by 2 seconds. But the cable/satellite providers apparently do the same and look worse. |

I have an additional antenna attached to my TV to get local channels in HD. My TV is a few years old, so I don't pick those up automatically. I also have
Dish HD DVR and have used it to record the local channels in HD a few times. It works fine, except that because it's an antenna the channels cut out
occasionally. I guess it all depends on your area. All my locals come in pretty good in HD except for ABC. I can't get that one at all.
The HD channels on Dish Network look awesome in my opinion. I had Time Warner HD for a while, but their service was constantly out so I switched to Dish. Still, when it did work, it looked great also. |

I'm still recording HD from a Samsung receiver to a JVC 30K. There has to be a better option out there; I'm waiting to pounce when Verizon offers FIOS in my neighborhood. Even when that hits, I can't believe you'll do any better than FCC-mandated HD currently over the air -- or "OTA." Any 'puter savvy Sucktonians want to chime in? |

I'm assuming that, as I'm out in the boondocks, I'm incapable of picking up more than perhaps one OTA HD channel. Unfortunate, truly unfortunate.

February '09 is approaching way too fast for those of us that like to watch television for free. I'm the OSTS mod and I agonize over the state of modern television. My fear? The greatest broadcast networks in the history of television -- CBS, ABC, and NBC -- will be reduced to just another cable option. This is seriously bad news when someone in the boonies who could pick up an analog TV signal suddenly can't. Worldband radio? The next forum in Survivor Sucks? |

Again, I think people are confusing HD and digital. You can have a digital tuner on your CRT style TV.

Cable HD comes through a coax cable. Satellite HD comes through the air.
