But speaking of Breath of Fire, has anyone played Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter? It was complete SHIT. I played it, died after like 30 minutes, and then turned it off and never played it again after that.

Breath of Fire 2 for the SNES was really good.

Just thought I should add that I LOVE Link to the Past so far. Why oh why did I have to grow up a Genesis kid? There are probably so many great SNES games out
there I haven't played. Mario RPG for example.

I had a lot of fun with my top 100 list. So I figured for my next game ranking, instead of creating a new thread I will just continue along in this one. This
will be a short one, my top 30 NES games! Due to the way things were revealed on the top 100 list, you already know how some games will stand here. So instead
of doing a countdown, I will do a count-up!
Based on the Top 100 list, you should already know the following rankings: #1.

Ninja Gaiden II
Ninja Gaiden II rocks! It did not make the Top 100 list, because I considered it too similar to the original. Plus it has been a really long time since I played this one. This game takes place about a year after the original. Ryu's girlfriend Irene has been captured, and it is up to you to go and rescue her. You team up with some special forces guy Robert to get the job done. Gameplay is similar to the first. This is a 2D hack n slash game with lots of powerups, hard enemies, cleverly designed levels, tough bosses, and cheap deaths. Although it is basically the same game with a different storyline and levels, there are a few differences. First of all, you can climb up and down walls in this game, as opposed to the constant back and forth jumping you had to do in the first. This is a big improvement. Also, the levels have some unique elements to them, such as wind, that makes things more challenging. Also, a new item you can get is a Spirit Clone, which is basically another version of you that mimics your actions and gives you and edge in the fights. Looking back at the YouTube clips, the levels seem even better designed than the first, and this is making me want to go back and play it. I srsly haven't played it in at least 10 years. There are some bad elements to it, such as the respawning enemies and the high degree of difficulty. However, the storyline is fantastic, the gameplay is terrifically fun, and it does present quite the challenge for someone like me who just breezes through games. Anyone with a Virtual Console should definitely revisit this title. |

I never owned a NES. I had an Atari, and then I got a Super Nintendo (and then a N64 after that). I kind of skipped the Nintendo revolution. Oops.

I still have Ninja Gaiden II. I hated the level where the wind would always blow you around. I think that was the one that had the guy with spiders as bosses.
I always liked the music in this game though. Glad to see it on your list...
I wonder if Friday the 13th will make your Top 30... |

Dr. Mario
When I was listing snubbed games that didn't make the list, I included Dr. Mario as one of the first to appear. Here is my original write up: Dr. Mario (NES)Some new statements I want to add: While I agree that the fun of the game is in the multiplayer mode, the single player mode isn't that bad. It is pretty boring and predictable, but if anything it serves as good practice for multiplayer showdowns. Also, I wouldn't say it is strictly a Tetris rip off, since it does include new gameplay mechanics. You don't match shapes, you match colors to try and get a certain number in a row as you can. You can line things up so that colors drop onto other colors, causing large chain combos. These combos drop pieces onto your opponent's screen, causing them to get buried in pieces in addition to effecting their strategies. This is a great puzzle game, and one that fell just shy of making the list. Dr Mariownage! |
