I dont think we have that puzzle piece yet. Do you? I think the donkey wheel is a HUGE puzzle piece of an explanation about the history of the island, what Dharma was trying to do, and what motivates Widmore, and what the Others (and their different leaders) find themselves devoted to. So in that respect, yea, i think the history of the donkey wheel and its relation to Dharma, and everyone else, kinda matters. It certainly matter more than endless discussions about the smoke monster or how these people could survive a plane crash...

Maybe the idea is that the early inhabitants of the island kept moving the wheel every so often, continuously keeping the island bouncing back so it always isnt "there" in the present to be found by the world...but something went wrong with the inhabitants and they could no longer turn the wheel at the intervals needed...and so it suddenly popped back into existence as the Black Rock was sailing by...? Thus setting the stage for Alvar Hanso to know where the island is...setting the stage for Dharma to come...then Widmore...etc... Boy, i cant wait for the Island history flashbacks in the next two seasons :)

Yes it matters. I'm (eta: mildly) interested in what transpired between '60 and '92. But I won't lose any sleep if DI is never mentioned again AS LONG as it isn't necessary to flesh out the full story of the island's existence - past, present and future. The various hatches and what Dharma was doing will eventually be explained to us as they need be, but I'm guessing that they won't.

Presumably when you're in the proximity of strange exotic matter it gets cold. Would Dharma scientists just look at the stuff and say "Cool, it's orange" and that would be that? They would probably want to sample it, remove some of it to other locations (possibly other hatches like the Swan station), and perform experiments with it. So it's not unreasonable to assume that coats would be there to wear when you're working with it. We've never really discovered what produces all the electricity on the island. Maybe some generator that uses the exotic matter? Was some of it contained in the foundation of the Swan station bottled up by a controlled magnetic field? It's also possible that mucking around with the exotic matter deposits is what caused the "incident" and created the smoke monster and who knows what else. With all the concern by people on the outside world (like the old lady in Desmond's first time travel) the whole planet is at risk if things don't go the right way. Whatever Dharma did its ramifications can apparently only be rectified by a specific series of events. Valenzetti equation or not that strange exotic matter probably has the potential to rip the planet apart or turn it into a black hole or something equally distasteful!

If there is something more we need to know then we'll find out and that's cool. Otherwise, I really don't care what DI knew about or didn't know about. I'm probably in the minority but I'm also not at all interested in that deformed statue or Black Rock either. Again IF it's necessary or interesting to the overall plotline (like seeing Widmore bid on that journal), I'm all for it. IF it's a huge part of the island mythology and I'm not convinced yet that it is - ok. Otherwise, bleh.

It would explain the advanced science stuff like smokie, time travel, purple sky and the stealth island. While also explaining the less than current scientific things in the dharma hatches. They have 20 year old computers controlling phenomena years in advance of what they should be given the labs we have seen. Maybe they stumbled upon things and are trying to back engineer them.

Note Locke and Ben talking about how far the elevator was going. To build the station, a structure was built near an area of extreme energy readings. The DI then dug down a deep elevator shaft and built a small lab with transport pod near this source of power/whatever. It could be that they did not know the wheel was there (and they were SOOO close!). They may have even gone cave diving somewhat (which explains the parka), but maybe not THAT DEEP. I mean, there might have been a cave explored where the DI found a "pit" in which their readings show as the source of energy, but had no way of exploring the bottom of the pit (short of jumping into it and going splat!). So they tunneled down next to it. Maybe something prevented them from connecting the lab to the wheel (unknown forces, spirits, etc)? THIS is why I want at least SOME of the past DI history explained. Maybe Ben is told this info by Jacob, maybe he sees the construction (time travel). Don't you all want to see this? I don't want this show to become a rehash of "the nine" with people sitting around cafe tables trying to figure out how to get to the island and why they need to go back.

Duh. There are plenty of things I want to see/know the answers to, and I think it will be interesting to see what we actually get explained to us in these last couple seasons. Should be a pretty good indicator of what was planned all along and what was added in when they were just making filler not knowing how much time they'd have to kill.

The DI is a mystery still....as far as how serious were they for doing research. Remember the meticulous notes taken in was it The Pearl (?)... were sent through tubes to nowhere? So I definitely would like to know just how serious of actual scientists were they? Like I said earlier...I'm beginning to believe Ben when he says they were virtually worthless. But to what extent they answer these question is yet to be seen. Like Felicia said...it may not even be vital to the rest of the story at all.

Or...if they want to stay away from a possibly hokey aliens backstory...they can explain the exotic matter and strange properties on a meteorite that hit the island a long time ago...and the inhabitants of the island grew along with the exotic properties of the island (radiation causing mutation to create 4 toed humans?) and were able to build a slightly advanced, mystical civilization maybe a thousand years ago (building temples, and hieroglyphs, and donkeywheels) making an advanced civilization that eventually became lost (atlantis) when the inhabitants found out how wheel turning can move the whole island. But at any rate, the donkey wheel (or more specifically being able to move everything across time) is most likely the main answer to most of the strange stuff about the island weve seen the last 4 seasons...so i still believe an explanation of that wheel (or more specifically what happens when you "move" the island) is pretty much the main mythology of Lost, so it will definitely be the focus of revisiting.

This "negative" time travel results in the "negative exotic matter" readings... which paradoxically allows the wheel to allow time travel in the "first" place. No, you just implied that with your snarky comment about parkas not equaling donkey wheels :P You just dont want to admit that im right...that the show is showing us that Dharma knew about the wheel, and possibly turned it with the use of a polar bear, thus the reason for a Dharma bear in Tunisia. They show us a Dharma parka AND a frozen donkey wheel in the same episode and some people want to pretend there is no connection...oh well. ;) And yes, i have many friends. I just dont have many interent "nerd" message board friends...because most of the time they cant handle strong opinions about subjects because the nature of constant internet posting involves a certain amount of passion than cant handle strong opinions, etc...even though the whole point of boards like this is to express opinions! :P Weird.. And maybe that future individual is Jacob? And hes in a half alive/half dead state on the island because hes waiting for the island to catch up to his future so he can fully die like he was supposed to (his fate wasnt to die in the past, so he cant really)...
