As long as it gets in the 10-12 million viewer range next season, it will be renewed for seasons 19 and 20.

After season 20 they will look at the ratings and make a decision whether or not to continue the show.

Survivor will most likely stand the test of time. I wouldnt even be surprised if there is a renewed interest in the show 30 years after its cancelled...

American Idol however most likely will not withstand the test of time.. No one of the future generation is gonna wanna watch our generations shitty music being preformed..(Not that our music is shitty, but to our children it will be)

What do you think the Gabon premiere will get?
I think 13-14 mil or less if it a 2 hour episode. if it's 2 episodes 14.5 average with at least 10% bump in the second hour.

Not terrible ratings...they always decline which seems weird, although are they only the american ratings?? Canada still has a big fan base from what I've heard...why isn't that counting in??

They are only American. From what I know Canada has about 2-5 million viewers each week (which is good)

Perhaps you guys remember a couple of months back when Fox announced they were trying to accelerate Survivor's demise with that new Hole In The Wall show? Well, this was at RealityBlurred today:

Big Brother 10 ratings increase, beating Hole in the Wall, which is no Survivor killer

The 10th season of Big Brother concludes a week from tonight, and although this time of the season tends to get rather dry because there's not much going on, the show's ratings have been increasing.

Compared to the previous week, the number of viewers who watched each night grew by three percent on Tuesday, 10 percent on Thursday, and 26 percent on Sunday, CBS announced. Sunday's episode was watched by 7.2 million viewers, a significant increase from the previous Sunday's 5.7 million, and grew by 37 percent among adults 18 to 49 and 33% among adults 25 to 54.

It also beat Fox's debut of Hole in the Wall, the new U.S. version of the Japanese game show, which was watched by 7 million viewers.

Speaking of that new show, about one minute of its 20 minutes of each of its first (watch it here) and second episodes were entertaining, because that's all the time it spends on people try to jump through the styrofoam holes. Even then, the camera work and editing makes it hard to see what happened, so we need five or six replays. Otherwise, it's all a waste of time that includes Brooke Burke shouting instead of hosting, and the announcer just saying variations of "it's time to face the hole" over and over again.

ABC's Wipeout is far more thrilling and watchable from end to end, and if Fox really thinks they're going to kill off Survivor with this, they need to check their heads for holes.

It could'nt even beat a My Name Is Earl rerun.

"Big Brother 10" scored a 5.1/9 for CBS at 8 p.m., edging "America's Got Talent," 6.3/11, and a "My Name Is Earl" rerun, 3.5/6, on NBC. The time-period premiere of "Hole in the Wall" earned a 3.1/5 for FOX. "Ugly Betty" came in fourth for ABC, while "Smallville" snagged a 1.4/2 for The CW.

Aren't they trying to "accelerate it's demise" with Hell's Kitchen too? I think Survivor can win over it. The only way that FOX could beat Survivor is with American Idol.

Survivor is experiencing attrition as well, but the old girl is long in tooth and still had a 7.5/12 from 8pm-10pm. Last year in the final numbers, Survivor China debuted to a 9.0/15. But both the Survivor or the Grey's premieres last year seemed to only be one hour.

CBS topped its closest competitor in the 8:00 PM hour by +18% in households (+1.2 rtg ), +53% in adults 25-54 (+1.9) +33% in both adults 18-49 (+1.1 rtg) and viewers (+3.27m).

From 8:00-10:00 PM, SURVIVOR: GABON (P) was tied for first in adults 25-54 (5.5/13, with ABC), second in households (7.6/12), viewers (12.91m) and adults 18-49 (4.4/11).

ABC won the battle of the two-hour season premieres Thursday night, continuing a strong ratings week for the network.

The Alphabet earned a 10.1 rating/16 share for the night, topping second-place CBS, 7.1/11, by a pretty wide margin. NBC finished third at 4.8/8. FOX, 2.8/4, took fourth, while The CW came in at 2.4/4.

ABC also dominated the adults 18-49 demographic with a 6.0 rating. CBS, 3.8, was second in the advertisers' coveted demo, edging NBC's 3.6. FOX averaged 2.0 and The CW 1.5.

CBS took the lead at 8 p.m. with the premiere of "Survivor: Gabon," 7.8/13. ABC's "Ugly Betty" began its third season with a 6.6/11. Back-to-back episodes of "My Name Is Earl" earned a 3.9/6 for NBC. FOX's "Kitchen Nightmares" was fourth, finishing just ahead of "Smallville," 2.6/4, on The CW.
