Well, clearly they aren't in the same number that powervoted him to being the winner of his season then. The sales figures, the lack of a recording
contract... these facts unfortunately don't lie.

His initial sales were solid, on a par with most of the other winners and Daughtry. The fanbase was there, and they bought. There was no building on that
base, however, because of lack and promotion and radioplay.

Common circular Taylorite propaganda there. Will you pull out the "At least Taylor didn't compromise his artistic integrity and he was happy with his
remaining ten fans" theory next?
I would probably sympathize if so many rabid TayMates hadn't been here, there, and everywhere through his ill-fated season crowing that Taylor would sell a zillion copies, revolutionize music, and every other contestant on the show has to be torn to shreds just to prop up Taylor. One can only hope, for his sake, that David Cook's equally rabid fans don't go the way of these TayMates/Blaker Girls/Bo Whores... |

No one HERE said he was going to sell a million copies. The fans who post here at Sucks said he was niche and would not outsell more mainstream pop artists.
If you would like to taunt the fans that actually said those things, you'll find them at the AI boards and at the Taylor fansites. Why don't you
direct your energy, or waste of it, at the people you are taking about?
And what I said isn't propaganda, it's fact. He had sales comparable to everyone else in the first two weeks, better than Jordin even, and didn't sell much after that. He had comparable initial fanbases to other winners, but failed to build on that. What is the difference between him and the others? Well, one is the type of music. He'd be difficult to get played on Top 40, obviously. But there is Adult AC and Hot AC and he should have been able to get played there. But TPTB threw him under the bus and didn't push for him to get played, so he wasn't. It was impossible for him to build on his sales with no one other than the fans he had already hearing his songs. Jordin's sales would have been far worse than his, but she got the radio play. Granted, she is pop so it's easier, but also she had solid promotion. It shows how important radio play is. Her initial album sales were lagging, but the promotion and radioplay helped to increase them. |

NTA is 100% correct.
Even his fans were upset with the album that was put out because they knew it wasn't comparable to the music he had been doing previously. Taylor's sales were just fine, and were more than most recording artists ever get to see and his tour was almost always sold out at every venue. He's no failure. Plus, his parting with his label was mostly HIS doing, no theirs. They offered a renewal, but he wanted more control. The problem is 19E... if he had renewed, he'd still be under the finger of the deal between the label and 19... and it's no secret that 19 and the AI producers hate Taylor Hicks. They were the ones responsible for his lack of promotion, and the label just did what they wanted to preserve their other deals. It's all politics, really. Taylor has been around the music industry for a long time and he knows how it works, and he knows a bad deal. He put up with it just long enough to get the national exposure he wanted and he's happily retreated to the smaller focus he wants. His true fans know that he's a niche artist and never expected him to rise to the ranks of stadium musician. He doesn't even want that. The real fans, the ones who get him and his music.. they all understand this and it's no big deal. People just like to think he's a "failure" because they compare him to Daughtry and the others. The difference is that Daughtry fits into the formula of guaranteed money making sheep. As does Carrie and even Kellie. Those are mainstream, popular genres of music that are guaranteed to sell. You can plug several people into those roles and still sell. The fact is that's Taylor Hicks is very happy where he's at right now. He's working on a new album -- two actually -- and it will be done on his terms with a team he chose. A lot of people seem to think that the only reaons one would leave a record label is because the label "dropped" them -- but that's not always the case. It was really a mutual thing. He wanted something more than what they were going to give him, so he refused to renew the contract. The label was well aware of why he left, even stating, "Taylor is going to record his next album on his own. He is no longer on the J Records roster." That's a carefully worded statement if there ever were one. They try to make it sound like they were the ones who dropped him, but his fans know that Taylor was the one who actually dropped them. His true fans are pretty happy about it, too. The label was doing him no favors, they never promoted him-- all because of 19 who hated him and spent all of their effort and time promoting Daughtry instead. Winning AI only gets you a recording contract, it doesn't guarantee sales or even promotion. You may think that winning alone is promotion enough...but it's not. They have entire corporations whose sole purpose is to promote artists. Taylor had every justification to refuse a renewal. Oh sure, he got a contract... but he was essentially forced to put out an album, that while decent, isn't what he or his fans really wanted. He had to do it in less than 2 months using other peoples' work. Then he was completely stonewalled and barely promoted. Why would anyone want to stay with a label/production company that treated them that way? Some of the best artists in the world never broke the top 40. I know that most of my favorite musicians never have.

The big problem is that the Soul Patrol was never as big or dedicated as the Claymates and Taylor couldn't get any new fans. If he can't come up with a song that gets played on the radio, he won't sell much as an indie either. |

He got plenty of new fans with American Idol, just not a ton. His problem is easy -- he's a live performer, not a recording artist. That's where he and
Daughtry differ. Daughtry can handle the genre of music that sells well on recording. If Taylor wants to sell more than he does now, he does need to work that
out... but his actual live shows are often sold out.
I know when I went to one of his shows, it was entirely more fun than watching him on Idol, but then I'm much more appreciative of the little guys and their quirky talents -- the ones who love music more than they care about being famous. I far prefer those over large concert venues where the only thing I hear is thousands of screaming idiots. |

OK, I looked up this Taylor Hicks guy on youtube. How old is he??? Did they raise the maximum contestant age to 45 or something?
I really should have paid more attention to AI after Trenyce got booted years back |

He was only 29 his season, but yeah, that gray hair made him look 40. Still, I liked him cause he didn't just stand there and sing boringly. I guess,
like Fantasia, he's really a niche artist. But he does what he does very well.

I am flabbergasted. 29?
I am a little surprised that the Idol machine didn't try and make him over to look younger...or maybe they did...but wow. |

I was looking back over the old DialIdol results, and amazingly Taylor was #1 every week of the Top 12. And #1 every week of the top 24 except for Top 16
week.
Not even the two Davids dominated DialIdol that much this season. Although the Davids margin of victory in some weeks was a lot higher than Taylor's. But Taylor was more consistent. |

Holy Fuck! So I'm watching Regis and Kelly this morning (don't judge!) and it's Broadway week and they have different shows performing songs and
today it's Grease. So the performance starts and it's Beauty School Dropout and Teen Angel comes on stage and starts singing and he blows. He blows so
bad the I actually stop what I'm doing to fully watch in shock that this is a Broadway cast and that people are paying big bucks for these tickets. It
wasn't until about 3/4s of the way through the song that I have a flashback to my trip to NYC a few weeks ago and remember seeing the posters advertising
Taylor Hicks as Teen Angel and I realize 'HOLY FUCK! IT'S TAYLOR HICKS'. I'd never had an opinion on him either way... never thought he was
great or craptacular. Well that's all changed now.
Did anyone else watch? |
