So what is your experience? Is Vista really working well for anyone? Does Office 2007 run on XP?
Any advice? And snarks are welcome, too, flame on if you must, but seriously, does Vista suck ass as bad as it sounds?

Vista or XP? |
Lead | |
|
I want to get a new laptop computer, and have to get a windows machine for biz reasons. However, my CPA just got new computers that have vista and her
conversion has been a nightmare. XP is only going to be "supported" for a few more months by microsoft. I didn't really want a Vista Machine
and don't really want to get XP if it is going by the wayside. I have not had any problems on my XP machine, currently.

I got a new laptop last summer and chose to get XP instead of Vista for program compatibility. Vista DOES suck ass, and all files from Office 2007 (what I
have) are interchangeable with Vista. My friend just bought a laptop with Vista and he hates it.

I uninstall Vista from everything we own. I despise it, plus I have editting equip and tons of hardware that just is problematic or downright unusable with
Vista. Not since IBM DOS v4.0 have I thought an operating system was this bad.
Other than memory and directory services, it is a piece of buggy shite. XP Media Center 2005 for the win! I love it. |

Vista came with my laptop and I like it. I barely use any installed programs or hardware though.

Vista is simply horrible. It bugs all the time, it actually makes decisions for you and prevents you from taking actions unless you go through a million steps.
It is way too paternalistic. Don't get it.

When I got my new laptop I figured I wouldn't like Vista, even considered downgrading to XP...but after getting used to it, I'm pretty pleased.
Navigating through your files is so much easier with it.

I couldn't get outlook from office 2007 to run on vista. I upgraded which I'm sure was their goal.

Simple rule of thumb: Get Vista if your PC is new with kickass RAM (2.5GB+) and good speed.
Otherwise get XP. |

I like Vista, it came installed on my Gateway I got last June and it seems easier to access things. The User Account Control can be kindy bitchy sometimes, but
I found the best thing to do is to turn it off, restart the computer, turn it back on, and then restart again.

XP is better right now but it will be eventually fazed out for Vista. Even XP had its problems early on.

After reading xabby's post, I will say that it does tend to "make decisions for me" and the million steps to do certain actions. IDK, I guess
time will tell if I begin to despise it or not.

QSF, go with XP if at all possible. Vista is a resource hog and runs slow. Microsoft is even trying to rush their next operating system out earlier than
planned to make up for the clusterfuck that is Vista.

Vista reminds me a lot of the Millenium Edition, it has some cool new stuff, but the bugginess of it makes me want to cave in my screen at times.

Vista is like coming here and starting a n00b thread. Only good if you feel suicidal.

some of your old programs, if you plan to install them on your new computer, may not work.
