But last night something stopped me dead in my tracks: a Kool-Aid colored Fantasia Barrino! Now, I have a horrifying fear of clowns but for some reason Fantasia's Bozo do' didn't bother me. In fact, I loved it!
The unexpected dash of diva brought something to "Idol" that has been sorely missing for the last few weeks: unpredictability!

Fantasia Barrino made her return to "American Idol" on Wednesday night and really stole the show with her new song "Bore Me."

It was almost like Fantasia was channeling James Brown, but she really burned it up.

Fantasia Barrino stole the show on the season 7 results episode of "American Idol" on Wednesday.

Fantasia, who won "Idol" during season 3 in 2004, came back as a guest star and graced the stage with her new song "Bore Me". Barrino's performance trumped the contestants on Wednesday, especially that of Syesha Mercado, who was eliminated on the show last night.

But all that blah blah aside, the truly important part of last night was previous Idol winner Fantasia Barrino's absolutely batshit insane, chicken dancing, terribly-fun-to-watch, voodoo ritual of a performance. Simon was shocked! Archuleta looked like he was going to faint! Even if you're not a fan of the show, it's worth a watch, after the jump.

Last night on American Idol, the final two contestants were determined. Syesha Mercado, the last female contestant on the show, was given the bad news on Wednesday's elimination show.

Mercado's exit from the show isn't the most talked about Idol moment, instead is former Idol winner Fantasia Barrino's performance. Fantasia performed her new single 'Bore Me,' and left Simon Cowell with a stunned look on his face. Her performance sparked comments ranging from "I Loved it…it was FUN and CRAAAAZZZY! I was up dancing!" to "What was all the screaming about? That's talent?"

Moving on, for those of you who don't give a low note about the mediocre current Idol talents, let's discuss Fantasia's guest appearance and her brilliant performance of her new single "Bore Me".( And by brilliant we sort of mean, "Oh my God, what the f*** just happened?")

Good, bad, we're not sure what that performance was - and judging from the stunned lapse in his perma-sneer, neither was Simon Cowell. Even hardcore Idol forum fans didn't know what to make of newly neon-haired Fantasia's on-air freakfest. Fan reports include everything from "I loved it...it was FUN and CRAAAAZZZY! I was up dancing!" to "What was all the screaming about?...She's lost it."

We have a final two, but Fantasia dominates "Idol" buzz

It was supposed to be Syesha's night. After all, it was the axed Floridian's last chance to shine on "American Idol" after a meteoric rise to third place that no one expected.

But here we are, the top two "American Idol" finalists decided after four intense months, and yet the buzz following Wednesday night's elimination show centered not around the impending David showdown, or on the ouster of Syesha Mercado, but an over-the-top performance by an "Idol" winner from four years ago.

Fantasia, the passionate, raspy-voiced single mother from North Carolina, to this day is arguably the edgiest "Idol" winner ever (Taylor Hicks and his premature head of gray hair don't count). Tonight, however, she truly outdid herself, bursting onto the stage with a head of fire engine red hair and three backup dancers and delivering a high-energy performance of her song "Bore Me."

The performance immediately sparked a lively debate on the Web over whether Fantasia was back to her magnetic self or had completely lost her mind.

"I loved it…it was FUN and CRAAAAZZZY! I was up dancing!" wrote one fan on the "Idol" forums, while another said: "What was all the screaming about? That's talent? She's lost it."

Many viewers commented on Simon Cowell's slack-jawed stare during Fantasia's performance, saying he couldn't have made his feelings any clearer.

On YouTube, where several versions of the performance were posted following the show, one viewer panned the performance, but admitted to being unable stop watching the video.

"For some strange reason beyond my own comprehension I can't stop watching the vid!!! It's like deep down inside I want to punish myself for all the mistakes I did in my life by watching this freakshow!"

Isn't that what reality TV is all about?

"I'm not a Fantasia fan... I've actually never heard her sing or any of her songs before (didn't watch S3). And I'm not an R&B fan, either. But that performance just flat out ROCKED.
I just sat on my couch with my jaw on the floor. She totally left it all out there, and - IMO - put on the best show I've ever seen on an Idol stage.

After the song, I was just thinking that I'd never seen anything like that before... but I wan't to see something like that again!
It had a Stevie groove, a James Brown breakdown, Hendrix guitar riffs, and a Missy Elliot attitude. Hell of a song, hell of an artist.

And I LOVED every second that Fantasia was on that stage. This season of Idol has been a snooze-fest. She came out like a bolt of electricity! The energy was sooo exciting.

The past couple of seasons have been so DULL and VAPID (Katherine McPhee anyone??) it's no wonder Simon looked stunned. Poor baby just got woken up out if a two-year nap."
