I see both sides of the ballroom dancers' solos debate. On the one hand, ballroom is strictly a partnering dance, so asking dancers to create a ballroom solo dance is almost near-impossible, but not completely. On the other hand, if a ballroom dancer ends up in the bottom three couples because they messed up their partner dance, well, then the argument can be made that they never had what it took to be that all-around versatile dancer that the show was looking for in its winner (argument holds no water if they land in the bottom for a BALLROOM dance, though, such as Anya and Danny's Foxtrot last year). That, plus theoretically, ballroom dancers should have an advantage at partner dancing, regardless of style, simply because they understand the need for synch and timing perhaps a little better than other dancers. I don't necessarily subscribe to this line of thinking, but I can see why people would think that.


In the end, though, if the choreographer gives them a horrible dance to begin with, nothing can be done with that (ahem, Tyce + Broadway).
