Pam & Jim are never leaving Dunder Mifflin. I saw the episode, with Jim "actually trying" and Pam's inquiry about the graphic design and walking off as sort of a play on The Gift of the Magi. Jim thinks Pam would want to stay at DM/Scranton and he needs to further cement his future there. Pam thinks Jim wants to stay at DM/Scranton, so she gives up on her dreams since it means moving to NY or Philly. Both actually would prefer to move on to something "better," but won't because they think they know what the other one wants.

Jim will NEVER turn into Michael. However, I think the "brilliant ideas" that Jim implements, that then fully or partially blow up in his face, are just making Jim view Michael in a slightly different light -- sort of making Jim slowly change his opinion of Michael from "total idiot," to "someone who tries, but doesn't succeed."

I love The Office for all the subtle nuances that each and every character adds to the show; that it is so un-PC and some things make you extremely uncomfortable watching. That is the beauty of this show. There are real people in the world similar to:

Michael (no boundaries, foot-in-mouth disease, legend in their own mind);
Dwight (uber over achieving butt kisser, asserting authority he doesn't have);
Toby (beaten down, pathetic, "friend" who inavertently makes an unwanted pass);
Jim (coasting through work, just enough to get by, goof-off);
Angela (judgmental, uptight, "by the book", control freak); etc., etc.

I've worked with people who are shades of all the characters on The Office, which is why I LOVE this show. I have personally experienced things that Pam puts up with. I think most of us can relate in some way to what goes on in these episodes and really laugh about it, when it is blown up out of proportion & exaggerated.

Even a "bad" episode of The Office is brilliant and funny. I'll be sad to see Toby go or any of the characters on the show go. It is such a terrific ensemble the way it is right now. They are a family, extremely dysfunctional, but a family who needs to stick together.
