As a powerful man Widmore would have enough spies and operatives to steal documents from Dharma. Remember it was said that the people on the island would have been heading to the one place they would be safe, and that's probably another hatch or the temple. It didn't sound like the goal was to kill the Losties but rather Ben and Ben's followers.
And what was that book that Richard showed young Locke when he was testing him? I couldn't make out the two words on the cover. Where they written in English or another language?
