Her breakthrough came through the biggest show on television, American Idol. She was one of thousands who auditioned for season four and by that point, the show had established itself more as a ratings winner than a record seller. Previous winners Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard and Fantasia released debut albums that sold respectably, but nothing on a scale that would seem to match the ratings success. Enter Carrie Underwood. When she auditioned with the Bonnie Raitt classic "I Can't Make You Love Me", the tone of her voice signaled her country leanings. Throughout the Idol season, she built a fan base quickly. The belief was that it was the year of the guys, but after she performed Heart's "Alone" on the Top 11 show, judge Simon Cowell made a bold prediction: "You'll not only win this show, you'll go on to sell more records than any previous Idol winner." She did go on to win the show, never even visiting the bottom three. But along the way, she made clear that country music was what she wanted to perform, and demonstrated a depth of knowledge that included Martina McBride songs "Independence Day" and "When God-Fearin' Women Get the Blues", Shania Twain's "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!" and Rascal Flatts' "Bless the Broken Road." She even had the gumption to cover the raunchy Dixie Chicks cut "Sin Wagon", leaving the "mattress dancin'" line intact. After her win, she released the obligatory post-victory single, a pop ballad called "Inside Your Heaven." Strong sales made it a #1 pop hit, but country radio showed some interest as well, giving it moderate airplay. When she released her first real single, "Jesus, Take the Wheel", radio jumped on it immediately. It entered at #39 and rapidly rose to the top, spending 6 weeks at #1. The success of that single was a strong beginning for her debut album, Some Hearts, which would eventually sell more than seven million copies. She took home ACM trophies in 2007 for Top New Female Vocalist and Single for "Wheel." Her next release, "Don't Forget to Remember Me", went to #2. Then her label released "Before He Cheats", and amazingly enough, it was a bigger hit than "Jesus, Take the Wheel." It not only topped the country singles chart, but got massive crossover airplay, too. Awards began to roll in, with a shocked Underwood receiving the CMA award for Female Vocalist, along with Horizon Award. Underwood was only the fourth act to win both the Horizon and their vocalist race in the same year, following Ricky Skaggs, Alison Krauss and the Dixie Chicks. Underwood also picked up two Grammys three months later, including Best New Artist. "Wasted" became another #1 hit, and her charity single "I'll Stand By You" sold so well that it entered the top ten of the pop singles chart the week it was released. Obviously, the pressure was on to follow up her debut album. Carnival Ride featured a more country sound and several songs co-written by Carrie herself. The first two singles, "So Small" and "All-American Girl" both went #1. Along the way, she repeated as CMA's Female Vocalist while winning Single of the Year for "Before He Cheats." That hit also netted her a third Grammy in just two years. As this is being written, the third single from Carnival Ride, "Last Name", is already in the top ten. Underwood is the most-played and top-selling female artist in country music today, after only two albums. She was invited to join the Grand Ole Opry cast early this year, further solidifying her country bona fides. It is a huge ad that is stretched along the side wall of a parking garage. This garage has similar ads in the past. For example, it used to have an ad for the Apple Ipod. The picture gives an idea of its size, but this thing is truly huge!! I don't know the specific address of the garage, but it is at the corner of Field and Patterson in downtown Dallas. The 2005 "American Idol" winner, Carrie Underwood, brought the sold-out house to its feet at 8:40 p.m. Wednesday at the United Spirit Arena. Kicking off the Carnival Ride Tour was the shining star of country and gospel music, Josh Turner. With his deep, soothing voice, blue eyes and debonair looks, Turner warmed the stage with his hits songs like "Firecracker" and "One Woman Man." The newly inducted member of the Grand Ole' Opry showcased his talents with a rendition of a Buddy Holly hit, making the crowd want more. The audience got pumping when he sang the title track from his debut album, "Long Black Train," with the sounds of a hustling train, its screeching wheels and its steaming engine. A five-minute countdown began at 8:35 p.m., and right on the dot at 8:40 p.m., the large screen behind the stage began showing a sunset desert with the silhouette of Underwood walking toward the crowd. Lifted from a hidden shaft, Underwood appeared to a roaring crowd in a skin-tight black ensemble with knee-high boots, a rhinestone belt and her golden locks to open with "Flat On The Floor." She took no time in making the crowd feel like the cost of a ticket was worth every penny, belting out her hit songs like "Wasted," "The More Boys I Meet" and "Just A Dream." Underwood urged the audience to clap their hands, stomp their feet or do whatever, but just have fun, and fun they had. During the entire hour and 20-minute show, Underwood used the whole stage, performing to all sides of the arena, with an added large screen directly behind the stage and two smaller ones on either side. On several of her songs, the screens showed a video, showcasing a speeding car hugging the curves with "Get Out of This Town," clips of her hometown in Oklahoma with the song "I Ain't In Checotah Anymore" and a slide show of pictures of Underwood as a police officer, a doctor, a cowgirl and a chef, to name a few, while she sang "All-American Girl." During the show, Underwood had five wardrobe changes, from the skin-tight black ensemble to a full-floor-length ball gown to stripping the ball gown skirt and making it a short dress to jeans and top to one of the crowd's favorite, a red-and-black Texas Tech jersey. "I have to say the confetti at the end and her wearing a Texas Tech jersey was the best," said Jenna Looney of Houston. While at times the crowd waited for Underwood to return to the stage in a new outfit, the entertainment continued on with her band jamming out, and each band member was able to showcase his talents. Before performing "I Told You So," a Randy Travis original, Underwood said she will be the newest member inducted into the Grand Ole Opry on Saturday, and she said Travis was the one who told her the news as she performed that very song on the Opry stage. Ending the night with "So Small," Underwood waved to the crowd and was slowly lowered below the stage on the secret shaft, but not for long. She reappeared for her encore wearing red and black and belting out the lyrics of the hard-rock band Guns N' Roses' "Paradise City." Nailing the song like it was her own, Underwood yet again showcased her talents, showing she is not just a country singer. But she didn't stop there. You can't go to an Underwood concert without hearing "Before He Cheats." As the crowd sang the lyrics, blasts of confetti exploded and there was no better way to end the show. "Amazing," said Emily Owen of Lubbock. "She was just amazing. When she came out with that Tech jersey, she is so great." Halston Arterburn, 12, of Lubbock said there was not a song she didn't like that Underwood sang. "I really liked them all," she said. "I rooted for her when she was on "American Idol." He still isn't going to outsell your queen nor become more popular than she is by any stretch of the imagination. Maybe someday you'll come to terms with that and stop worrying your batshit little head off about it. You have enough other issues to focus on, schnookums. Pretty grim when babarocks has more class than you, Vinnie baby. BTW, I like the new song. I don't know about the video but the song is catchy. Not quite BHC catchy but a Ruben assload better than the last single. They play it quite a bit on my local c.untry station.

Her performance Tuesday night for a nearly packed house of 6,700 at the Don Haskins Center was not a great show. It was an OK show, but certainly not up to the level of many of the genre's more seasoned superstars. Heck, it wasn't even as enjoyable as opener Josh Turner's 45-minute set. It had its moments, to be sure. The one-two encore punch of "Paradise City," the Guns 'N Roses slammer that's been a staple of her concerts for a couple of years, and "Before He Cheats," the revenge tale that crossed her over in the pop world, almost made up for the often nature of her 18-song, 90-minute performance. And her earnest turns on her breakthrough hit ballad, "Jesus, Take the Wheel" and "I Told You So," an overlooked gem from her new "Carnival Ride" album, were powerful reminders of just how strong and expressive a singer she can be. When the voice that won "American Idol" three years ago isn't buried in the mix, which she was often on Tuesday. It was hard to tell if it was a matter of policy or a poor effort on her sound crew's part of adjusting to the Don, which, with the stage reaching about center court, was cut down into more of a large theater than a basketball arena. The 25-year-old singer with the herculean voice sounded strained - and was sucking down a lot of water - in the show's rocked-out but mostly lackluster opening section. And after her first costume change, into a weirdly bottom-lit blue evening gown, she even let the crowd sing the first chorus of "Jesus, Take the Wheel" as if she was conserving her voice for its big money finish. Whatever she did, it seemed to work, because her pipes were open full-throttle for the next song, "I Told You So," which proved an impressive if somewhat monotonous for the voice that seduced millions of voters on "Idol" and millions of music buyers after her run on that career-making show. One of the problems that has plagued Underwood's post-"Idol" performing career is her lack of personality onstage. This was my third time seeing her, first as a headliner, and it seems that the charming young woman who had emerged on her 2006 tour with Kenny Chesney has been lost in the din of oversized video screens, catwalks, costume changes, routine audience patter, an unevenly paced set and a woman who seems more concerned with hitting her marks than hitting people where it counts - in the heart. A perfect example of that was her performance of the lovely tearjerker "Just a Dream," one of the most poignant songs on "Carnival Ride." It's about a young woman, just 18, whose boyfriend has died in battle. It's a song that, if her vocal had been audible over the band's wall of sound, might have resonated with an audience in an Army town, especially since venue management said about 600 Iraq veterans had been given seats to the show. She never acknowledged it or dedicated the song to those special guests. Maybe she didn't know they were there. Maybe she did and just couldn't or wouldn't depart from the script. It was an opportunity squandered, though she did manage to mention her impending induction into the Grand Ole Opry on Saturday. A pre-Mother's Day dedication of "Don't Forget to Remember Me," a song inspired by her own mom (which brought her to @!@!! when she performed it in Atlanta a couple of weeks ago), would have been a nice touch. Instead, she introduced it by saying how much she appreciated the fans "for giving me a job," which she probably says every night. Underwood just doesn't seem to have that kind of spontaneity. Not yet. She was a bit of an automaton up there - an automaton who can belt it out. Heck, she showed more personality in a brief backstage video that accompanied "We're Young and Beautiful," one of a handful of songs from her 7-million-selling debut album "Some Hearts" that curiously was cannibalized into a medley, something usually reserved for much older artists who want to quickly dispense with moldy oldie hits they've tired of singing. All the bells and whistles in the world can only cover up that stuff so much. If the 25-year-old Underwood spent more time letting her hair down than navigating the stage in stiletto heels, she could turn into one of country and pop's more engaging performers. For now, she's overreaching and underachieving. She's only been doing this on this level for a little under three years, so she'll get better. She'd be wise to study guys like Josh Turner, the affable South Carolinian with the big baritone who opened the show. He's not exactly Garth Brooks up there, but Turner has a calm, assured air about him and an easygoing stage presence that comes with experience and confidence. And he's got a batch of songs that reflect the life he values - home, faith, family and the love of a woman (that was his wife Jennifer on keyboards). He doesn't have offer disclaimers, as Underwood did after she sang "Last Name," which, with its tale of regrettable drunken exploits, is like a sequel to "Before He Cheats." Of course, Josh Turner's not the household name Carrie Underwood is, prompting hime to joke: "She's sold a lot more records than I have, which is exactly why you should go out and buy my record." This is from the Desert local news, just thought I would post this since alot of you Fantards seem to think Taylor is encroaching on Carrie's status. LOL I couldn't agree more with this guy, Taylors lack of humility and her lack of vocal talent will be her ultimate downfall. Carrie is humble and vocally talented something Taylor will never have. And before anybody says Oh scared of Taylor stealing your girls thunder, let me say this, I would much rather and be happy to see someone who is a real talent like Sara Buxton or Miranda Lambert get a little of Carries accolades than this twit. This girl is seriously overhyped!

When it's only a 5700 seat arena, it's not very shocking. A 10,000+ seat arena would have been very impressive though. And that great review about Farmbot being a shitty performer is pretty much what all of us have been saying all along. She simply can't perform well. A nice voice but when you put her in front of 5,000 people, she just sucks. Even when you watch her on TV, the performances feel contrived, fake, over- rehearsed and robotic. Hell, even on her Grammy performance of Before He Cheats, she stayed at the back of the stage the entire time! I could honestly see her selling out 10,000-20,000 seat arenas but I can not honestly see it being a very good show with her shitty performance skills. All aboard the Mantasia Hate Train!

Judging even from her TV performances, she's awful, ever since American Idol right up to her latest Grammy's performance. I'd much quicker buy a CD of hers than see her in concert which I know would be a huge disappointment. Some artists are known for their great concerts, and I don't think Farmbot is even close to one of those artists. Yes, the article did mention that she has time to grow but in all honesty, from American Idol till now, I haven't seen a single bit of improvement or growth! Just the same old frozen stances and lack of connection today as she was on AI. She's a good recording artist but not a very good performer. All aboard the Mantasia Hate Train!
