Man, what pathetic chick wants to live that life by choice?

Actually, I do. After living in the city, it's exactly what I want. Of course, I was exposed to it quite a bit as a kid. My grandmother had a ranch and even though I lived in LA County, I lived in (what used to be) a rural area. In fact, when I was 19, I almost married a farmer. I hate the city. HATE IT.

The home that we're having built is on enough acreage that we're going to have a little farmlet. It already has ducks and stock pond. We're going to have egg-laying hens and a couple of sheep. Nothing outrageous. The sheep will be my mom's thing (she's moving with us) because she dyes and spins custom yarns for knitters. She's been ordering fleeces, but she want to raise her own.

Besides, the turn to more sustainable living is becoming more popular lately. It's not meant to really replace an income, just a hobby of sorts and a different lifestyle. I'd far prefer to let my boys loose on a 10-acre farm on a dirt road with ducks and chickens and have them learn a little bit of responsibility than having to worry about them crossing the street at the nearby intersection where there is at least one vehicle accident a month. I want them to appreciate the things they have rather than just feel entitled to things being given to them. I also want them to know where their food comes from and teach them to make good choices.
