It was just a typical shitty management maneuver that Ryan knew he could pull out if he needed to. I thought it was actually pretty realistic, and uncomfortable as a result.

Remember how what's her name was shown as a problem drinker, which was initially funny, then every single episode they tried to use that same joke? Which is one of my biggest frustrations with this series - the lack of restraint, and the inability of the writers (or whoever) to trust the audience to pick up on nuance or subtlety in characters. If something works, they will then beat it into the ground until it's annoying and farcical, instead of amusing. I don't think Meredith and Creed are the only characters left that haven't been overused (yet - btw is Meredith even really used at all anymore, other than to block a ball with her head?) - Andy, Oscar and Kelly are still characters I look forward to seeing - and I think Phyllis had some of the best scenes last week. The way she started cracking up during her line as really endearing. I fixed the original post. I said Meredith when I meant Phyllis. I actually like Andy, he's a lot better than Dwight most of the time.

Posts: 19344 (05/06/08 12:27 PM) Registered user Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Connection Block Invite	Yeah, I don't really remember anyone saying that the Ryan/Jim/Toby power-play was unrealistic or unwarranted, but the fact that Toby has a thing for Pam adds another dimension to the situation and makes it a hotter topic for discussion. Some of the "Evil Toby" discussion wasn't necessarily brought on by the Ryan/Jim confrontation, but rather, Toby suggesting that Michael fire Stanley given that Michael is openly hostile to Toby and Stanley took Michael to task for his bullshit -- something that rarely ever happens.

Ferchrissakes, with all the ridiculous and MANY frequent HR violations that have occurred over the past couple years it seemed random, but I figured it was the writer's (lazy) way of setting up the Stanley/Michael confrontation.

On a side note, I think the fact that these episodes have generated such dissection says a lot for what the U.S. OFFICE has become. Probably sucks for those who expect it to be non-stop laughs (whether the humor is subtle or over-the-top zany), but I love it.

Jim as a sales person has been pretty good for Dunder Mifflin, he has been promoted twice and is highly thought of by Wallace. Just because he does slack off at the office (as does everyone else, I might add) doesn't mean he doesn't do a good job.

It was pretty misguided though. Ryan was using the goofing off with Dwight and hanging out with Pam as a cover up. Jim's sales numbers are good and he didn't deserve a formal warning at all. If Ryan had an issue, he should havve spoken with Michael who should have then talked with Jim in his office alone with the door closed. Ryan was completely inappropriate.

Posts: 6768 (05/06/08 4:58 PM) Registered User Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Connection Block Invite	oh, i totally agree - he was definitely using it as an excuse to break balls, and should have handled it differently. however, and I don't know about the rest of you, but i've definitely been witness to that exact same type of petty behavior at my own workplace. it's usually some a-hole just like ryan, someone who worked his way up and let the position go to his head. doesn't see the forest for the trees or whatever.

There was only one time that Ryan participated in one of their pranks, when he presented that Lion King story as his own. Other than that, I remember him refusing to joke with Jim and Pam. Now he's power-mad and insecure. He's threatened by Jim because of Jim talking to that other guy, and never liked Jim anyway. I'm looking forward to the impending downfall of Ryan and can't wait for him to eat some humble pie.
