All we have that's weird is about 6-7 rug stores on the main strip. Nobody here buys the rugs, nobody is ever IN the rug stores, the same fading carpets
have been in the windows for years and years.
I'm not sure what actual business is taking place there, but I don't think it has much to do with rugs. Oh, we also have the dolphin topiaries. In the center of the main street are all these dolphin-shaped bushes. For every holiday, they "decorate" or "dress" the dolphins. For fourth of july, they all carry flags. At christmas they all sport santa hats. For easter, they are festooned with flowers and baskets. They get swags for memorial day, costumes for halloween, etc. Very weird.

This is our mayor. Her name is Hazel McCallion and she is 182 years old and still in fine fettle.

Not necessarily an oddity but we have some dude named Daniel Wong running for mayor of Sugar Land. And ya, he pronounces it like you think he would.

A tale of human oddity from my hometown:
My friends and I were standing at the bar in a dimly-lit music hall, waiting to see our favorite local pothead band. A heavyset Mediterranean-looking older man was moving slowly around the room, sipping a beer and bopping slightly to the music. He had wild curly hair like a homeless person, and a general air of oiliness. He approached the bar and clumsily pushed aside my friend Mary Kate in his haste to order another beer. With a shocked curse, MK stumbled forward into the bar. She threw a disgusted look at the man, and shouted at us through the music, "Look at this, the motherfuckin Big Ragu just kicked my ass." My friend Sarah and I laughed, and Sarah commented that Eddie was always making a scene on account of him being such a lousy drunk, and because he loves to be recognized. MK's like, "What the fuck are you talking about?" So Sarah explains, "I thought you knew who he was, you called him the Big Ragu. That's Eddie Mekka." And MK goes, "Oh shit, I thought he just LOOKED like the Big Ragu." We pointed out to MK that Eddie was, in fact, wearing his satin TV Land jacket at that very moment. Eddie Mekka, sad sad hairy man. |

The Phallic Rock:
Unquestionably a fertility symbol, this six-foot high carved stone, according to legend, will assist women wishing to become pregnant if they leave offerings and spend the night. Located at the top of a hill, and very close to the cliffs overlooking the ocean, Phallic Rock and the stone circle nearby seemed to be rich with energy - truly one of earth's powerful sacred sites.

we have a couple that i know of. there's a really cool house made of all kinds of stuff. it's really hard to describe so i'll have to take a
picture of it the next time i'm close to it. then there's that one house that is completely underground and NOBODY knows it's location except the
owner. i guess it was built in the 60's back when they were scurred of all that scary shit that was going on back then so they built it as a bunker type
house. pretty cool. that i can't take a picture of.

I still live in my hometown, so I don't dare post the oddest oddity which was named in Ripley's Believe It Or Not.

Not necessarily oddities.....but Ma Barker was born in my hometown, and Nathan Boone (son of Daniel) is buried there.
The whole damn town is an oddity in and off it's self. that's why I got the hell outta there. |
