that was a load of shit from Carly Simon IMO... telling Brooke that she was too special to make the finals and that anyone who makes the finals does so because they are generic?![]()
I think in some sense she is right. Because Idol's goal isn't to have the most unique talent out there - it's to get somebody who is going to
appeal to a mass audience. Usually those types of people have to be somewhat generic. Brooke can't sing everything, therefore her voice is not
generic. It can't be transfered to lots of different styles of music. I think what she really meant was that Brooke (and Jason would fit too) should feel
good about having an untrained, unique voice because it makes her songs more personable. And she's right in saying that a bunch of now legendary
singer-songwriters would never have made it far on Idol - they'd be too much of a risk because they're not great vocalists. Can you imagine Bob Dylan
making it past auditions? These people made it big because of the songs they wrote - Idol winners are initially steered into making very generic albums with
mass-appeal. They primarily rely on their vocals and not on the quality of their songs. So yes, you need to be somewhat generic to win Idol (that may partly
explain why Hicks hasn't made Idol any money). Doesn't mean the finalists are less talented though.
Truth is, Brooke had a lot of hits and misses on the AI stage - so obviously there are other reasons as to why she got voted off rather than just her voice. I
just think Simon wanted to let her know that people with her type of voice/vibe should be valued in the music industry and that by winning AI she may have had
to compromise her style.
