Not a particularly inspiring week for the Idols on the Billboard album chart. Daughtry does return to the top 15, up from No. 16, but is down 8% in sales to 23,000. His total is 3.99 million, so a milestone will be achieved next week. Jordin is exactly 10 units behind him (also rounding off to 23,000), moving 17-16 on the chart, but declining 7% in sales. Her total is 678,000. Carrie's Carnival Ride also inches up, 33-32, but drops 3% in sales to 17,000 for a total of 2.03 million. Her Some Hearts is down 54-69, selling 10,000 (down 9%) for a total of 6.38 million. Finally, Josh's We Weren't Crazy falls 95-146, selling in the mid-4,000s, down 37%, for a total of 30,000 in three weeks. Idols off the chart follow. Could Billboard be in on the conspiracy? Kellie sold 3,300, less than a hundred below the No. 200 album this week, just missing a return to the chart. She's up from 3,000 the previous week, and her total is 748,000. Kelly's Breakaway sold 2,200, down from 2,400, for a total of 5.98 million. My December sold 900, down from 1,000, for a total of 762,000. Bucky sold 1,500, holding steady, for a total of 338,000. Blake also sold 1,500, down from 1,800, total 289,000. Elliott got a 40% or so boost from appearing on Idol last week, jumping from 1,000 to 1,400 for a total of 505,000. Randy sold 1,400, down from 1,500, for a total of 27,000. Bo sold 1,000, down from 1,400 but still well above what he had been selling before his Idol appearance a few weeks ago. Total is 48,000. Mandisa sold 600, same as last week, for a total of 77,000. Kimberley, sparked by her 5th Grader near-triumph, sold 400, up from 300, but is still at 20,000. Fantasia sold 400, down from 500, total 512,000. Katharine slid to 200 from 300, total 370,000. Clay did the same, total 525,000. All three members of last week's 100-sales club return with the same number. Taylor's total is 701,000, Ruben's is 237,000 and Constantine's is 25,000. Paris just failed to make the cut; total still 21,000. And just for a bit of current (currant?) spice, David Cook's Analog Heart sold 900, compared to 300 the previous week, for a total of 1,200, all generated from Amazon.com, which no longer offers it for sale. She's got two #1 songs and just got another top 10 with her latest song Last name...she performed on the Grammy's, CMT awards, SNL, she seems to show up on the cover of at least one magazine a week too. This album is seriously underperforming if it's based on money put out v. sales coming in.

Seriously, Carrie is 3 and 5 for idols this week. I don't think there's anything to worry about. Just because she's outselling Kelly doesn't mean you have to find any way to trash her. 2.03 million is damn good in today's world, and her first two singles sucked, so I'm sure the sales will pick up with Last Name and upcoming singles. I love Kelly, but My December is already down to triple-digits. Fucking flop if I ever saw one.

Posts: 2143 (04/23/08 5:50 PM) Registered User Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Connection Block Invite	Idol downloads: Minimal Mariah effect Even though she had a new album coming out to tie in with her Idol appearances, Mariah Carey did not see her back catalog come rolling back en masse onto the digital songs chart this week, although there were a few noticeable effects. But first, let's look at the actual Idols. Jordin's No Air holds at No. 4 but drops 12% to 136,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan, which brings her total to 1.38 million. Tattoo slips 38-39, dropping 20% to 24,000 for a total of 1.56 million. A number of performances from Idol Gives Back hung around for a second week on the chart, and the breakout seems to be Daughtry's What About Now, which fell 8-13 and dropped 39% to 53,000 to bring its total to 213,000. Big drop aside, that's a strong performance. Feels Like Tonight is up 43-37, but drops 4% in sales to 25,000 for a total of 347,000. Home inches up 90-89, but slides 6% in sales to the mid-13,000s, totaling 1.45 million. It's Not Over falls 119-125, dropping 11% in sales to the mid-to-high 9,000s; total is 1.75 million. Over You is down 141-151 with a 9% slippage in sales to the mid-8,000s, totaling 979,000 now. Carrie's top tune is All-American Girl, up 49-44 despite an 8% sales slide to 23,000; total is 450,000. Praying for Time, from IGB, plunges 10-48, falling 67% in sales to 22,000 for a two-week total of 87,000. Before He Cheats drops 83-93 and is off 15% in sales to 13,000, for a total of 2.29 million. Last Name is up 158-124, selling just under 10,000, a 10.5% increase, for a total of 53,000. Josh's We Weren't Crazy is down 84-98, owing to a 23% sales drop to 12,000; total is 46,000. And the current Idols' Shout to the Lord from IGB drops 15-59, cratering 65% in sales to 19,000 for a total of 75,000. (Not unexpected as the direct impact of the show wanes.) OK, now to the related phenomena. (I'm skipping Leona Lewis this week, as her Idol relationship is extremely tangential. Let me know if this bothers you.) Mariah Carey's Bye Bye, which she performed on the show last Wednesday, is one of several tracks from her newly released album to show up on the chart, but it's by far the biggest: It premieres at No. 11 with 60,000 downloads. But it's also her pre-designated follow-up single, so it's tough to credit Idol with all of the influence. Three other new Mariah tracks made their debuts: Migrate at No. 61 (19,000), Side Effects at No. 95 (12,000) and I Stay in Love at No. 146 (9,000). Three older Mariah tracks also appear on the chart: Always Be My Baby, sung by David C. last Tuesday, is new at 108 with 11,000 sold. Hero, performed by Brooke, is 178 (8,000). And We Belong Together, performed by no one, is 179 (8,000). So again, the reasons are partially Idol-related, partially because people are just generally thinking Mariah because of the new album and its general surrounding hoopla. Jason's Rainbow effect is still in, well, effect, as the Iz version stays on the chart, albeit in reduced circumstances (an 11-47 drop, down 65% in sales to 22,000). And Paula's Dance Like There's No Tomorrow drops again, 108-135, and is down 23% to 9,000 for a total of 272,000. No truth to the rumor that her follow-up is called Talk Like There's No Tomorrow.

Yes, it's Idol, but regardless, they all can't go 7x platinum like Carrie's first album did. It shouldn't be expected in the least. Over 8 million sold over the course of two albums is fantastic, hardly any artist does that. (How much has she sold world-wide?) Jordin's doing great. If she keeps it up, she could hit the 1 million mark.

She's still got some good singles left on her album, which could boost her sales. She also will probably perform on finale night. I'm guessing Carnival Ride is going to launch back to the 30,000s when Last Name starts charting highly soon.

That said, every 2nd album released by an Idol does 1/2 as well as the previous one with one obvious exception. The more albums they release, the worse they do and that includes Kelly. Jordin is a pleasant surprise who hopefully will go platinum if she has more hit singles on the album. Blake is a huge disappointment and seems forgotten by his fans who've moved on to this year's crew.

There were busloads of schoolkids that showed up to see it while he was there, many from out of state. So, hopefully the album will do well. The song snippets sure sound promising, to me anyway.

Fuck Carnival Ride was even released during Holiday shopping season and opending with over 500K in sales.... CD sales are down no question about it but coming off a huge debut and with all the promo I guess I expected her to be well over 3 million in sales by now... I do at how defensive you carrietards get when someone hints that Carrie might not be selling as well as she did last time. Kelly's My December had three days of promo and one bonafide single to radio and that's it.... Not to mention all the negative press surrounding it so are you really shocked that it flopped? and besides that, what does My December have to do with Carnival Ride? saying My December flopped doesn't improve Carrie's sales in the least.... it just makes you look like a fantard dumbfuck who can't admit that perhaps the hype surrounding the album was a bit overblown....

In total Carrie sold 27K units last week of the two CDs combined. It's not too shabby to have 2 titles in the Top 100 albums. Plus she had 68K downloads of the songs that made the sales chart as reported above. In all that is probably in the neighbourhood of $300,000 in music sales just last week for Carrie's stuff.
