I just wanted to weigh in here. She's been getting some heat on some boards for not honoring the song in its traditional, somewhat typical, approach--meaning, a more operatic treatment. But to me, this version is so much more moving because she manages to access all aspect of her amazing voice, all of which are so expressive. She's restrained and soft in some parts and forceful and exultant in others, just the way a prayer should be. (That big note she holds toward the end is like a cry to be understood; and the ending scale up the 3 whole octaves is like a pure ascension toward revelation, in whatever terms that might represent.) She adds her own emotional interpretation to the entire piece with her phrasing and her innate sense of personal investment. I find this much more compelling than if it were performed by even the most accomplished opera singer, many of which I've seen and heard perform this piece.

I say all this because I am astounded by her talent. I can't imagine any other high-profile singer pulling off this kind of performance--one that is both technically wide-ranging and heart-breakingly emotive. She's in a class by herself, and that's a rare thing. As Swedish Chef mentioned, too, the fact that she's 25/26 is incredible. She has the sensitivity of a much older artist, which is exciting for what she will do in the future.

poor bst.... it really galls you to see someone praise kelly doesn't it? why do you guys take it like a personal afront whenever someone likes something Kelly does?
