It's a game show because they play a game and the winner receives a prize. It's also a reality show. All game shows are reality shows (Super Password, Deal or No Deal, etc.) because they involve real people. Dateline and 60 Minutes are also considered reality shows. If Deal or No Deal presented their contestants a contract that said they could fix the winner, and the contestants signed it, Deal or No Deal would be in trouble.

The government got involved back in the 50's and that's why till this day there's a standards and practices person on the set of every game show. Big Brother and Survivor haven't been called out yet and probably never will be because they're considered primarily reality shows. Except they're not because of the gigantic cash PRIZE.

No, It's is a "reality competition" -- not a game show. The FCC made this very clear about five years ago when every Claymate on the planet complained about his losing American Idol to Ruben Studdard. Reality competitors are compensated for their times in addition to competing for a prize. Participants on games shows are not compensated as a general rule nor given a stipend for expanses. It's all on their own dime.

Once casting for a reality competition is done, they become cast members, not contestants. That doesn't mean they're low paid actors, though.

The fact is that this show can be produced and much as it wants. It's not rigged...producers just use extremely heavy handed tactics to get the reaction they want. Ultimately the HGs make their own decisions, but as the article above mentions, they also sign their lives away to be on the show. They have no one to blame but themselves.
